    • PURPOSE: To carry out sulfonation reaction by placing a heating surface to evaporate the unreacted oil from the sulfonation product flowing on the surface in the form of a thin film, and a condensation surface to condense the evaporated unreacted oil, interposing the vapor of the sulfonation agent having reduced pressure between said surfaces.
      CONSTITUTION: A heating medium is passed through the jackets 3, 4 of the outer tube 1, and cooling water is passed through the inner tube 2. The vapor of sulfonation agent (sulfuric anhydride) is transferred through the vapor path 21 under reduced pressure, and the reaction liquid containing unreacted oil and sent from other sulfonation apparatus is supplied through the feed pipe 15 and the slit nozzle 16 and flowed down along the heating surfaces 11, 12 in the form of thin film. The evaporated unreacted oil vapor is made to contact with the condensing surface 19, and the condensed oil is flowed down along the condensing surface. The oil is sulfonated with the vapor of the sulfonation agent, and taken out of the outlet part 17 together with the formerly sulfonated product flowing down along the heating surfaces 11, 12. The evaporated vapor of the reaction liquid is condensed in the mist collecting part 20.

    • PURPOSE: An alkane or alkene is added to separate unreacting olefin from the reaction mixture resulting from sulfonation of an olefin, neutralization and hydrolysis whereby the titled compound which is used as an active ingredient in detergents is obtained in high efficiency at low temperature.
      CONSTITUTION: An olefin of 10W30C is sulfonated, neutralized and hydrolyzed and unreacting olefin is separated from the reaction mixture where an alkane or alkene of 8W27C less than that of the sulfonated olefin is added in an amount of 5W200pts.wt., per 100pts.wt. of the olefinsulfonate salt to effect separation into the aqueous phase containing the sulfonate salt and the oil phase containing the unreacting olefin. Since this process permits low conversion of sulfonation, it can be applied to the sulfonation of an inner olefin of low reactivity advantageously.
