摘要： PURPOSE:A specific separation auxiliary is added to a reaction mixture containing saturated fatty acid alkyl ester which is obtained by a specific method and the mixture is stood to effect simple, easy and high-efficiency separation of the titled compound which is used as a component of synthetic detergent. CONSTITUTION:A mixture of saturated and unsaturated fatty acid lower alkyl esters is sulfonated with SO3, neutralized, and hydrolyzed into a mixture of saturated fatty acid lower alkyl ester with sulfonate salt of unsaturated fatty acid lower alkyl ester. Then, the mixture is combined with a separation auxiliary selected from 2-8C polyhydric alcohols, liquid alkylene glycol at room temperature and olefins of 6-30 carbon atoms such as ethylene glycol and stood to give the objective compound substantially free from saturated fatty acid esters and separation auxiliary.

CONSTITUTION:1mole of ester of a fatty acid shown by the formula RCH2COOR' (R is 6-20C alkyl; R' is 1-6C alkyl) is sulfonated with 1.0-1.5 mole of 1- 15vol% SO3 gas diluted with an inert gas at 40-80 deg.C, the reaction product is separated into a liquid phase consisting essentially of the sulfonated ester of a fatty acid and the unreacted ester of a fatty acid, and a gas phase consisting essentially of the inert gas and SO3 gas, and the liquid phase is aged under heating at 90-150 deg.C under 10-200Torr reduced pressure, to give an ester of alpha-sulfo fatty acid. The desired compound can be obtained with slight coloring and formation of a small amount of by-product by this process.
