    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a minute carbonaceus structure that has a highly graphitized layer on the surface and a possibility of forming an intercalation compound in the structure because of the existence of a highly developed and stacked network of six-membered rings of carbon atoms on the surface.
      SOLUTION: The carbonaceous structure is obtained by heating at least one element selected from carbon black, a metal, boron and silicon or a compound containing the element(s). With the carbonaceous structure as the starting material, the minute carbonaceus structure with a highly graphitized layer formed on the surface of the primary particles of the structure is obtained by removing at least one element selected from a metal, boron and silicon by re-heating the carbonaceous structure.

    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a carbon-containing refractory having excellent oxidation resistance, corrosion resistance and thermal shock resistance and suitable as a refractory brick for the lining of a molten metal vessel or a refractory for a molten metal flow passage. SOLUTION: The carbon-containing refractory brick having a decarbonization layer formed on the surface by molding a refractory raw material composition containing 0.1-15 pts.wt. carbonaceous raw material (B) to 100 pts.wt. refractory aggregate and heating in an oxidation atmosphere is manufactured and is used as the refractory brick for the lining of the molten metal vessel or the refractory for the molten metal flow passage. It is preferable that the thickness of the decarbonization layer is 1-15 mm and the content of carbon element in the actual carbon part is 0.1-12 wt.%. Further, it is preferable in the heat treatment that the time necessary for elevating the temperature from 800°C to 1,200°C is controlled to equal to or below 8 hr and the heating is carried out at 1,200-1,800°C for 0.5-500 hr.
