    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a shield machine that can excavate a tunnel with a substantially rectangular cross section in a forward earth with only a pair of cutters and that is prevented from being rolled, and a method of constructing the tunnel with a rectangular cross section using the shield machine. SOLUTION: The excavating range of the shield machine 1 is divided into two parts at the general center of the shield machine 1. An excavation part is provided to each of the divided excavation ranges (right and left half ranges of the shield machine 1). A rotating body 21a the rotating axis 33a of which is at the generally center of the excavating range is provided to one excavating range. A frame 25a is joined to the rotating body 21a. The frame 25a extends in the radial direction of the rotating body 21a, and a cutter 29a is provided to the end thereof. A same excavating part is provided also to the other excavation range.
