    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To elongate a life under the vibration and impact environment, by using a steel for bearing, including carbon and chrome as the main additional elements, and including a specific amount of silicon, as a material of a fixed ring, and specifying the amount of the residual austenite after the quenching and tempering. SOLUTION: A fixed ring exposed under the vibration and impact environment, is made of a steel for bearing, comprising carbon and chrome as the main additional element, and including 0.15-0.35% of silicon, as a material, and the amount of the residual austenite just under a bearing face after the quenching and tempering, is controlled to be not more than 8%. The residual austenite is unstable in texture under the vibration and impact environment, and the yield strength is low, so that the micro plastic deformation is easily generated, and further the partial change of texture and the cracking are easily generated by the vibration and the impact when the amount of the residual austenite is over 8%. Further the loading circle at the fixed ring side is constant, so the vibration and the impact have high influence, and the life of a bearing is determined by the damage of the fixed ring. That is, the long life can be obtained under the vibration and impact environment without increasing the size of the bearing.

    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To increase fatigue life during high speed rotation and high load operation by a method wherein the fixed ring of a grease-lubricated rolling bearing is formed of a steel having a specified amount of residual austenite. SOLUTION: The outer ring, being the fixed ring of at least a bearing 13 on the pulley 20 side, of the inner rings and the outer rings of a pair of bearings 13 and 14 is formed of a steel having a residual austenite amount of 0.05-10%. A subzero process is applied between quenching and tempering and by increasing a tempering temperature to 250-380 deg.C based on an ordinary tempering temperature of 150-200 deg.C, a residual austenite amount can be decreased. By reducing an austenite amount, the increase of the heating value of the interior of a bearing occasioned by the increase of a speed and a tension is suppressed and a durable life against grease seizure is improved. Further, when a residual austenite amount is high, plastic deformation is apt to occur to a rail due to the increase of a load caused by a high tension and the reduction of the residual austenite amount is effective to the plastic deformation described above.
