    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a variable damping-force damper with a high productivity, that can be manufactured at low cost and is excellent in durability, and to provide its manufacturing method. SOLUTION: The variable damping-force damper 10 includes: a cylinder tube 12 filled with a magnetic fluid; and a piston 16 which partitions the inside of the cylinder tube 12 into a first oil chamber 14 and a second one 15, and has a communicating hole through which the magnetic fluid circulates between the first oil chamber 14 and the second one 15, and a coil 33 for impressing a magnetic field to the magnetic fluid inside the communicating hole. A damping force is controlled by changing the viscosity of the magnetic fluid inside the communicating hole by supplying a current to the coil 33. The cylinder tube 12 has a Ni plating film 22 which has a Vickers hardness of 800 VHN or more and is formed on its inner peripheral surface by electroless Ni plating and heat treatment.       SOLUTION: The sun gear 64 of the planetary gear mechanism 61 of an actuator for driving an output rod by reducing the rotational speed of the rotary shaft 45 of a motor is formed integrally with the rotary shaft 45 of the motor. The number of components is thereby reduced compared with the case for composing the sun gear 64 by a member separated from the rotary shaft 45, and further the reduction ratio of the planetary gear mechanism 61 is increased by reducing the diameter of the sun gear 64. One end portion of pinion pins 66, 71 for rotatably supporting the pinions 68, 73 of the planetary gear mechanisms 61, 62 is supported by carriers 65, 70 in an overhung state. Thus, the carriers 65, 70 are composed of plate shape members, and the thickness of the planetary gear mechanisms 61, 62 in the axial direction is reduced.

The axial ends of the piston ring 41 are positioned in outer sides of the side covers 42, 43, and the piston ring 41 and the side covers 42, 43 are fitted together by loose fitting.

When the motor 36 is stopped, and the toe angle of the wheels is kept, a thrust receiving flange 74 integrated with a male screw member 95 of the feed screw mechanism 39 is elastically supported in the axial direction with respect to a housing 32 by a repulsively urging means 113 composed of a coned disk spring to prevent generation of any play. Any unexpected expansion/contraction of the output rod 33 is prevented, and unstable toe angle of the wheel or noise generation can be prevented. In addition, it is unnecessary for preventing any unexpected expansion/contraction of the output rod 33 by running the holding current in the motor 36, and there is no problem wherein the power consumption of the motor 36 is increased.     • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To avoid the fall-off of a lock nut which holds a thrust supporting flange of an expansion actuator on a housing without the need for a special locking means. SOLUTION: A ring gear 63 of a planetary gear type reduction gear 37 is screwed to the inner peripheral face of a first housing 31 through its opening, and the thrust supporting flange 74 of a feed screw mechanism 39 is held by the lock nut 78 which is screwed to the inner peripheral face of the second housing 32 through its opening. When the openings of the first and second housings 31, 32 are joined to each other in the axial direction, the lock nut 78 and the ring gear 63 are opposed to each other via a minute clearance α in the axial direction. So, even when one member out of the lock nut 78 and the ring gear 63 being screwed is loosened, the movement of one member is prevented by the other member. This surely prevents the fall-off of the lock nut 78 and the ring gear 63 from the first and the second housings 31, 32 without the need for using a special locking means such as a circlip.
