    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a generation method of carbon nanotubes, which is inexpensive and results in high productivity.
      SOLUTION: The generation method of carbon nanotubes comprises steps of: forming a base layer on a substrate; forming a catalyst layer containing a catalytic metal on the base layer; pulverizing the metal in the catalyst layer; and generating carbon nanotubes by a thermochemical vapor phase deposition method using the catalyst particles as nuclei. The method is characterized in that: the substrate contains SiO
      2 by not less than 70 wt.% and Al
      2 O
      3 by not less than 15 wt.%, with the sum of SiO
      2 and Al
      2 O
      3 of not less than 90 wt.%; and the base layer contains SiO
      2 by not less than 40 wt.% and BaO from 2 to 40 wt.%.

    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a cut-off method of carbon nanotubes capable of homogenizing lengths of carbon nanotubes formed in a laminar fashion on the surface of a substrate over the entire surface.SOLUTION: Not only is the mobilizing direction of a substrate K mobilized along a specified direction in a state where a carbon nanotube layer C having a vertical orientation is being formed thereon deflected by an angle exceeding 90 degrees by a cylindrical guide roller 35 configured midway along a mobilization path R of the substrate K but a laser beam L is also irradiated onto a flexed portion M of this carbon nanotube layer C along a direction orthogonal to the axis of the guide roller 35 so as to laser-cut the outer distal end portion of the carbon nanotube layer C along the widthwise direction thereof orthogonal to the mobilizing direction of the substrate K.
