    • PURPOSE:To control fuel supply based on the result of a misfire cylinder detection while preventing a catalyst from deteriorating by increasing the quantity of fuel to be supplied to an engine based on the detection of a misfire cylinder. CONSTITUTION:An intake manifold 3 is provided with fuel injection valves 7... individually corresponding to cylinders C..., and the fuel supply to each cylinder C from each fuel injection valve 7 is controlled by a control means 8. When an engine is normally running without a misfire based on the feedback of oxygen concentration indicating the air fuel ratio in exhaust gas, the control means 8 controls the quantity of fuel to be supplied to all the cylinders C..., and while the engine is running at speed NE that is set at high engine speed or lower with a misfire detected on some cylinders, the control means 8 controls the operation of the fuel injection valve 7 so as to increase the quantity of fuel supply to cylinders C without a misfire with this constitution, fuel temperature can be restricted low and catalysts can be prevented from thermal damaging while preventing running performance from deteriorating by avoiding power shortage caused by fuel supply stop.

    • PURPOSE:To accurately detect failures in an exhaust air circulation control system in either transition or normal operations by judging that the exhaust air circulation control system is at fault when the deviation of the actual value of valve opening from a target value of valve opening is equal to or more than a specified value in response to engine operations. CONSTITUTION:An EGR valve 16 is provided with a valve opening sensor 26, the valve opening sensor 26 detects the operating position of the valve body 18 of the EGR valve 16 so as to forward the detected signal to an ECU 5. The ECU 5 judges whether or not the value of an output signal from the valve opening sensor 26 is abnormal, and concurrently judges the operating conditions of an engine 1 based on the detected signals from various sensors such as a thetaTH sensor 4, a PBA sensor 7, a TW sensor 8, a Ne sensor 9, an O2 sensor 12 and a PA sensor 13, so that the target value of valve opening of the EGR valve 146 in response to the result of the judgement is operated so as to be set up. And when the deviation of the actual value of valve opening from the target value of valve opening is equal to or more than a specified value in response to engine operations, it is thereby judged that an exhaust air circulation control system is at fault.

    • PURPOSE:To positively detect any failure of a valve timing switching mechanism by means of a relative simple constitution by comparing detection values of intake pressure on the upstream of an intake valve with a specified discriminant value. CONSTITUTION:In an engine 1, single pipe parts 2'' of an intake manifold 2' are con nected to respective cylinders, and throttle jets 24 are provided in single pipe parts 2'' close to an intake valve on the upstream of the intake valve. Surge tanks 26 are connected through pipes 5 to respective throttle jets 24, and further manifold absolute pressure sensor 16 are connected to the throttle jets. In the engine 1 where the valve timing V/T is switched to 'high speed' or 'low speed' depending on operating conditions, intake negative pressure in single pipe parts 2'' are smaller at the time of high speed V/T than that at the time of low speed V/T even when the opening of a throttle valve is the same. Thus, any abnormality with which a V/T switching mechanism remains fixed to high speed V/T is spite of low speed V/T indication, can be detected by comparing the intake negative pressures in respective cylinders detected during idle running of the engine by the manifold absolute pressure sensors 16 with a specified discriminant value.

    • PURPOSE:To extend upper limit of speed for the mechanism where a valve timing variable means is provided on either or both of suction or/and exhaust valves by altering the speed that is to be a standard to reduce the engine output during acceleration according to the alteration of valve timing. CONSTITUTION:In a valve timing variable means, suction and exhaust valves are driven open/close by means of a cam for low speed in a non-connected condition of a driving rocker arm and a free rocker arm, as well as by means of a cam for high speed in a connected condition of these, and the connected condition is switch-controlled by means of controlling an electromagnetic valve 19 by an electronic control circuit 7 through a switching mechanism. In the electronic control circuit 7, when an engine driving is so accelerated that the engine speed reaches the predetermined high speed, a fuel injection valve 6 is controlled in such a way that the engine output is reduced. The speed that is to be a standard for judgement in reducing the engine output is altered according to the switching operation of valve timing.
