    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display device, having reduced display unevenness due to image sticking and a residual image phenomenon and with high image quality, with respect to a liquid crystal display device using an IPS(in-plane switching) mode, in which a liquid crystal is rotationally operated mostly inside a plane, and displaying is carried out using birefringence of the liquid crystal. SOLUTION: In the liquid crystal display device comprising a pair of substrates of which at least one is transparent, a liquid crystal layer held between the substrates, a pixel electrode, a common electrode and an active element on one of the substrates and alignment control layers and polarizing plates formed on the respective substrates, the image sticking and generation of the residual image are prevented by forming the pair of the alignment control layers with an organic polymer of polyamic acid type or polaymic acid ester type with 60% or higher relative imide ratio or by disposing at least one or more insulation layers between the alignment control layer on the side of the substrate, on which a group of the electrodes is formed and the pixel and common electrodes thereunder so as to flatten the end parts of the electrodes and to moderate the electric field concentrating.

    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an active matrix type liquid crystal display device having a wide angle of visual field without producing afterimages by controlling the density of polar functional groups in the alignment controlling layer formed between one substrate and a liquid crystal compsn. layer to be smaller than the density of polar functional groups in the alignment controlling layer formed between the other substrate and liquid crystal compsn. layer. SOLUTION: A first alignment layer 8 and second alignment layer 10 are made of different materials from each other so that the second alignment layer 10 easily adsorbs ionic impurities than the first alignment layer 8. Namely, the density of carboxyl groups and amide bonds in the second alignment layer 10 is controlled to be larger than in the first alignment layer 8. Therefore, lots of ionic impurities are adsorbed to the second alignment layer 10, which decreases the amt. of ionic impurities adsorbed to the first alignment layer 8. Thereby, since deviation of changes produced by DC voltage caused by burst voltage is decreased on the first alignment layer 8 having a larger effect to change the potential of the liquid crystal layer, production afterimages is decreased.
