    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a lateral electrolysis type liquid crystal display device whose liquid crystal layer exhibits a small specific resistance value, which can prevent the generation of orientation failure due to static electricity and which has a wide angle of visibility, when an electrolytic current is applied in parallel to the surface of a substrate to drive the liquid crystal, by adding an electrolytic substance to the liquid crystal liquid. SOLUTION: This liquid crystal display device has a pair of substrates 1, 13 at least one of which is transparent and a liquid crystal layer 12 nipped between the substrate 1, 13, has a plurality of electrodes 2, 3, 8, 9 used for applying an electric field to the liquid crystal layer 12 in approximate parallel to at least one of the substrates 1, 13 and a plurality of active elements connected to the electrodes, and further has an orienting film 11 formed on the liquid crystal layer-contacting surface of one of a pair of substrates 1, 13 and an optical means for changing optical characteristics in response to the molecule orientation state of the liquid crystal layer 12. Therein, an electrolytic substance such as a compound of the formula [R is H, an alkyl or the like; X is phenylene or cyclohexylene; A is ophthalmic anhydride group or phenyl group substituted by COOH, CONH or the like; (n) is 0-2] is added to the liquid crystal of the liquid crystal layer 12.
