SOLUTION: In this position measuring instrument for underground excavator, a measuring unit 400 having a common lens 411 for converging the scattered lights from the front and rear light sources 41, 42, position detecting elements 412-1, 412-2 for detecting photoreceived positions of the converged lights, polarization-reflecting prisms 413-1, 413-2 for transmitting the lights incident into the lens, and for guiding the converged lights to the respective position detecting elements, and the light sources 41, 42 of which the scattered lights are directed forwards and rearwards by the respective reflecting prisms is installed in the each measuring point, and the position of the point to be measured with respect to a measuring base point is measured based on detection results in the respective measuring units and the distance between the respective measuring units. In the position measuring instrument, a controller 43 for increasing and decreasing a light quantity of the light source of a photoreception source is provided to bring the maximum value of brightness in the light photoreceived by each picture element in the each position detecting element within a range between an upper limit value and a lower limit value.

SOLUTION: This position measuring instrument for an underground advancing machine is used for measuring the position of a measured point P5 relative to a measurement base point P1 based on a starting angle formed between a sight line V in front of the base point P1 and a measurement reference line V0, deflection angles formed between sight lines V on both sides of respective intermediate measurement points P2 to P4, and distances between the respective measurement points P1 to P5. The instrument is provided with a storage for storing a set value θ1 for the starting angle and set values θ2 to θ4 for the deflection angles, these being set by predetermining the positions of the respective measurement points P1 to P5 on a planned line, an arithmetic unit for preparing data making it possible to identify deviations of actual values from the set values with respect to the starting angle and the deflection angle of the forefront of the intermediate measurement points, these being measured in the process of advancing by the excavator 1, a display for displaying the data, and a judging means capable of judging whether or not the found values of the distances between the measurement points have run up to set values L1 to L4 on the planned line.

The distance measuring equipment for construction work is constituted so as to measure the distance L between a base point of measurement and the point to be measured on the basis of the phase difference (d) of the pair of image-forming points on the optical sensor 23a detected when the lights 21a and 21b of the light source 10, the point to be measured, are condensed by the light condensing lenses 22a and 22b.
