SOLUTION: The air conditioner is provided with a compressor 1, outdoor heat exchanger 2, depressurizing mechanism 3, indoor heat exchanger 4, and the four-way switching valve 5. Switching between a cooling mode and a heating mode is conducted by the valve 5. In comparison between the temperature of at least one of the heat exchangers and the temperature therearound, in case the temperature difference is out of the range of a set normal temperature difference, determination is made that the valve 5 is in malfunction for stopping the operation.
