    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To sharply suppress the occurrence of rolling and pitching on an excavator by installing multiple split small cutter heads in the plane facing a working face, connecting each small cutter head to an independent cutter drive section respectively, and independently applying a parallel link motion to each small cutter head. SOLUTION: A cutter head 6 is divided into four small cutter heads 6a-6d, four small cutter heads 6a-6d are arranged at the upper, lower, right and left positions, parallel link motions in the opposite directions having the revolving speed suitable for the soil quality of the natural ground G to be excavated are applied to the small cutter heads 6a-6d adjoining vertically and laterally to excavate the natural ground G. The torque reaction of the whole cutter head caused by the excavation of the natural ground G when the parallel link motion is applied to the single cutter head with a large cross sectional area can be reduced, thereby the occurrence of rolling and pitching of a shield machine can be sharply suppressed.

    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an underground excavator and a constructing method of a branch type shield tunnel which enable excavation of tunnels with varied sections, including a large-section tunnel and a plurality of small-section tunnels, and which agitate no excessive earth at the time of excavation of the small-section tunnels and have few components becoming unnecessary at the time when the excavation changes from that for the large-section tunnel to that for the small-section ones. SOLUTION: An underground excavator 20 having a constitution wherein a plurality of separate shield machines are connected separably, with a connecting shield machine held between, so that they enable excavation of a tunnel 23 of a section of an underground railway double track station part, in the connected state and wherein the separate shield machines are separated by removing the connecting shield machine so that a plurality of small-section tunnels can be so excavated by each separate shield machine as to branch off from the tunnel 23 of the section of the underground railway double track station part. Each shield machine is provided with excavating parts which excavate a face by conducting parallel link movement respectively, and at the time of excavation of the tunnel 23 of the section of the underground railway double track station part, setting is made so that the excavating parts may excavate the face by conducting the parallel link movement integrally.
