    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress sintering at a high temperature by developing a catalytic function which is sufficient for a practical use. SOLUTION: The composite oxide comprises at least a kind of Al oxides selected among θ-Al 2 O 3 , δ-Al 2 O 3 and α-Al 2 O 3 and a functional oxide not containing γ-Al 2 O 3 and not forming a solid solution with the Al oxide. The primary particle of the Al oxide is mixed uniformly with the primary particle of the functional oxide at a nanometer scale in the composite oxide. As the Al oxide and the functional oxide which do not form the solid solution are functioned as respective barriers at a nanometer scale, the sintering at a high temperature is suppressed. As the functional oxide does not contain γ-Al 2 O 3 , the growth of a Pt particle and a solid phase reaction with Rh are suppressed and then the sufficient catalytic function is developed.     • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a ceria oxide assistant catalyst for purifying an exhaust gas capable of suppressing a decrease in specific surface area during use and also exhibiting high oxygen adsorption and desorption performance. SOLUTION: A ceria oxide assistant catalyst comprises synthesizing by a gas phase synthesis process of performing oxidation and combustion in a gas phase and thereafter carrying out heat treatment in a non-oxidizing atmosphere, including at least ceria, not including an oxide present on a grain boundary without solid-solubilizing in ceria, having a specific surface area of 10 m 2 /g or larger and showing an amount of oxygen adsorption and desorption at 500°C of 60% or more to a stoichiometric limit value. In the gas phase synthesis process, since an oxide powder having a structure in which a primary particle with a nanosize is normally aggregated in a chain-shape is provided, a contact area between primary particles is small, the growth of a particle is suppressed, and a decrease in specific surface area is suppressed. Then, the oxide powder is heated and held under the non-oxidizing atmosphere, thereby having an X-ray diffraction peak belonging to a pyrochlore phase and exhibiting a high OSC.
