SOLUTION: The piston is made of the Al alloy with the low Ca content, which contains 0.002 mass% or less Ca. The piston uses an Al alloy ingot comprising, by weight ratio, 0.003 mass% or more Ca, 4-25 mass% Si, 7 mass% or less Cu, 1.5 mass% or less Fe, 7 mass% or less Ni and 0.2 mass% or less Mg.The method for manufacturing the piston comprises: the ingot-making step of melting the Al alloy raw material having the above composition; the deoxidization treatment step of removing nonmetallic inclusions such as an oxide in the molten metal; the molten metal-holding step of reducing the Ca content by exposing the surface of the molten metal to atmospheric air for 20 minutes or longer; then the Mg-adding step of adding a desired amount of Mg into the molten metal; and the casting step of casting the molten metal into a mold having a desired form.

The temperature range in a solid-liquid coexistent region on solidification is made narrow, and various crystallized products are almost simultaneously crystallized out, so that the crystallized products are uniformly and finely distributed, and a metallic structure in which an α-Al phase as a matrix is is finely parted is formed. The structure of an aluminum alloy to constitute the rim flows, and casting flaws present in the rim are considerably reduced. In addition, as a result of re-melting, crystal grains of the aluminum alloy are refined, and degenerated into a dense and uniform structure.

SOLUTION: In the method for refining the metallic structure, metal A being in a semisolid state and metal B being in a semisolid state and having a composition different from that of the metal A are mixed under the condition that the temperature Tc of the resultant metal C after the mixing takes a value lower than the liquidus temperature in the composition of the metal C, and then the metal C is solidified. In this method, the temperature Tc' of the metal C assumed directly after the mixing of the metal A and the metal B takes a value within the liquidus region in the composition of the metal C. It is preferable to perform the mixing of the metal A and the metal B with stirring. Moreover, the metal C after the mixing can be formed into semisolid state and the metal C in a semisolid state can be solidified within a mold. Further, the metal A in a molten state and the metal B in a semisolid state can be mixed. In the method for manufacturing the alloy material, the above refining method is adopted.
