Immediately after the comple tion of the reaction, gamma-butyrolactone together with an excess hydrogen gas which was fed to the reaction zone in a substantial amount of 0.2-1.5m , prefer ably 0.3-0.8m based on 1kg maleic anhyride is taken out, condensed by the condensers 2 and 3, sent to the gas-liquid separator 4, the gaseous phase consisting essentially of hydrogen gas is separated, the liquid phase is sent to the separator 5, THF, etc., as by-products are taken out 15, and gamma- butyrolactone is stored in the storage tank 6.
