    • PURPOSE:To produce a coagulated latex free of impurities such as a precipitant or emulsifier-derived products, by adding a specified precipitant to an emulsion polymer latex obtained by using a carboxylate emulsifier and neutralizing it. CONSTITUTION:In the production of a coagulated latex from a polymer latex (e.g., ABS resin latex) obtained by emulsion polymerization by using an emulsifier in which the hydrophilic group is a carboxylate (e.g., potassium stearate), the polymer latex is precipitated by adding thereto a precipitant containing 0.05-50 equivalent, in relation to the carboxylate groups of the emulsifier, of an acid (e.g., hydrochloric acid) and 0.05-20 equivalent of a water-soluble salt of a bi- or trivalent metal (e.g., CaCl2 or AlCl3), and then neutralized by adding 0.5-5 equivalent, in relation to the added acid, of a base (e.g., NaOH). The polymer thus produced is freed from problems such as discoloration, corrosion of a die or the like, during molding, because the carboxylic acids which are emulsifier derivatives formed from the emulsifier and the precipitant are stabilized and the impurity content of the final polymer is reduced because of a small amount of the added polyvalent metal salt.

    • PURPOSE: To recover particulate aggregates of PVC in high yields, by adding coarser PVC particles to an aqueous dispersion of PVC for processing into a paste, and mixing the resulting dispersion with an organic liquid which is difficultly soluble in water and neither dissolves nor swells PVC.
      CONSTITUTION: PVC of an average particle diameter of 10W60μ in an amount of 1W70wt%, based on the total weight of resin, is added to an aqueous dispersion of PVC for paste technique. To the resulting dispersion is added an organic liquid which is difficultly soluble in water and neither dissolves nor swells PVC (e.g., dioctyl phthalate, trioctyl trimellitate, butyl oleate, or liquid paraffin). In this way, it is possible to obtain particulate aggregates of PVC in extremely high yields, and further to facilitate markedly the recovery of the resinous matter contained in the aqueous layer left after separating the particulate polymer.
