    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve the difficulty in a prior-art optical amplifier that the types of optical amplifiers disposed on an optical fiber transmission line at a predetermined distance include a predetermined optical output control system and a predetermined gain control system, which have merits and demerits, and when any trouble occurs on the optical fiber transmission line and there is lowered the level of propagating wavelength multiple signal light, it is difficult in the prior-art optical amplifier to remove the trouble. SOLUTION: There are provided a predetermined optical output control optical amplifier and an optical amplifier of the type of predetermined gain control including a loop circuit for oscillating spontaneous emission light outputted from the predetermined optical output control optical amplifier. When any trouble occurs on an optical fiber transmission line on which the optical amplifier is disposed, a variable optical attenuator disposed in the loop circuit is controlled to control the gain of the predetermined optical output control optical amplifier and hence recover the level of wavelength multiple signal light and the gain tilt of the same.     • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical fiber amplifier which are capable of always monitoring a state of an excitation light source while preventing an optical surge, a method of monitoring the excitation light source and an optical transmission device. SOLUTION: A pulse modulation signal is supplied from a pulse width modulator 13 to a driver 14 to oscillate an excitation LD 7 in a pulse. The state of an input optical signal 1 is detected by an input interruption detector 10, and the pulse width of the pulse modulation signal is switched, depending on whether an input interruption is detected or not. In a normal mode in which the signal interruption is not detected, the pulse width is set so that an output average value of the excitation LD 7 becomes a prescribed value. In a standby mode in which the signal interrupt has been detected, the pulse width is set so that the output average value of the excitation LD 7 becomes substantial zero. In this way, even in the standby mode, the abnormality of the excitation LD 7 is confirmed by monitoring an output light of the excitation LD 7 which emits light intermittently.
