SOLUTION: A crankshaft is rotated to the normal rotation side in the initial stage of the rotation start of the crankshaft by driving a motor generator(M/G), and when the rotation of the crankshaft is stopped by the normal rotation, reverse rotation is carried out by a portion of preset reverse rotation angular width (80 deg.) (S810-S860). Thereby, the pressure in a cylinder is lowered, and the crankshaft can be maximumly reversely rotated until immediately before an intake valve is opened. Accordingly, when the crankshaft is then rotated again to the normal rotation side by the normal rotation drive of the M/G (S880), the pressure in the cylinder is set lower than that in the last time, and inertia torque is set sufficient. Thereby, the purpose can be accomplished and the starting performance of the engine can be improved.

When a new air-fuel ratio within the cylinder becomes a value suitable for combustion at a time t2, combustion by ignition at the over advance angle position and the rotating direction of the engine is reversed. Subsequently, the internal combustion engine is ignited at a position suitable for maintaining rotation of the internal combustion engine in a state that the rotating direction is reversed and an operation of the internal combustion engine is performed in a state that the rotating direction is reversed.

Thereafter, a phase lag process of gradually retarding a phase of an ignition position to reduce the rotating speed is performed in the state where the opening of a throttle valve is kept at a minimum value. When the rotating speed reaches an over phase lag starting rotating speed, an over phase advance process for advancing the phase of the ignition position to a set over phase advance position is performed. When the reversion of the rotating direction is detected in the over phase advance process, the ignition position is transferred to a rotating angle position suitable for keeping the rotation to the reversed direction.
