SOLUTION: This method for producing methionine or a salt thereof comprises the steps of producing 5-(2-methylmercaptoethyl)hydantoin by reaction between 3-methylmercaptopropionaldehyde, an aqueous solution containing hydrogen cyanide or a salt thereof, ammonia (or aldehydecyanhydrin) and carbon dioxide (or ammonium bicarbonate) optionally in the presence of water and then hydrolyzing the thus produced 5-(2-methylmercaptoethyl)hydantoin; wherein as the material of the equipment for producing the 5-(2-methylmercaptoethyl) hydantoin, a Ni-based alloy including 18-25 wt.% Cr and 11-24 wt.% Mo is used.

The method for controlling the crystal grain diameter to 100-600 μm average grain diameter comprises the crystallization of the methionine-containing solution which is a multistage continuous process. The method for controlling the physical properties of the methionine crystal powder is a reactional crystallization for depositing the crystal while neutralizing a metal salt of the methionine with an acidic gas.

The compound of the formula ClSOOR is obtained by reacting thionyl chloride with a hydroxy compound (e.g. methanol, etc.). The reaction is performed in an organic solvent preferably at -20 to 30 deg.C for several hours.

The reaction is preferably carried out under neutral or basic condition (pH 9-11 or thereabout).
