    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve accuracy in the distance between motor vehicles and relative speed by eliminating weighting to each distance data, when obtaining the distance data in divided areas in a data compressing means and reducing the effects of the distance data on both ends of the motor vehicles, at which distance measurement errors are large or of error distance data due to noises, such as disturbance light and interference light. SOLUTION: This nearby motor vehicle detecting device is constituted of a distance- measuring means to measure the distance to a body present in the direction of distance measurement, by applying electromagnetic waves toward a plurality of directions around own motor vehicle and receiving the reflected waves at the body present in each direction of distance measurement, a data-compressing means for reducing the number of items of distance data measured by the distance-measuring means, and a motor vehicle recognizing means to recognize the motor vehicle around the own motor vehicle, on the basis of the distance data compressed by the data compressing means. The nearby motor vehicle detecting device is provided with the data-compressing means to notice on the divided areas that an irradiated area irradiated with the electromagnetic waves is divided into a prescribed number and to select one data as distance data in the divided areas from the distance data included in each divided area.

    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve reliability on decision of awakening by a method wherein when the eyes of a human being are in an opening state, at least two different feature amounts by which the degree of awakening is featured are calculated at intervals of a given time, one feature amount suitable for the state of a human being is selected, and based thereon, it is decided whether the human being is awakened. SOLUTION: A feature amount calculating means 31 calculates at least two kinds of feature amounts to feature the degree of awakening is calculated based on a closing eye continuance time measured by a closing eye continuance time measuring means 20. The feature amount has at least two feature amounts of one being a first feature amount depending upon an eye closing continuance time and the other being a second feature amount not depending upon an excessive long eye closing continuance time. Feature amount selecting means 51 selects the optimum feature amount of at least two kinds of the feature amounts according to the state of a subject. In this case, when the subject is in an awaken state, the second feature amount is selected and when the degree of awakening is in a lowering state, the first feature amount is selected. A deciding means 40 decides it from a feature amount selected by the feature amount selecting means 51 whether the subject is in an awakening state.

    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent a display system from operating uselessly, when a viewer is dozing by detecting an awakening state of the viewer by an awakening degree detection means and controlling an image display means according to the detected awakening degree. SOLUTION: Power supply is supplied from an LED power supply circuit 16 to an infrared LED 15 so that the infrared ray LED 15 is emitted and when an photographic means 11 photographs the face of a viewer, a retinal reflection image is observed on its photographic image. This photographic image is input in an instantaneous sight pattern detection circuit 12 to detect an instantaneous sight pattern and then input in an awakening degree detection circuit 13. Appropriate binary threshold is set as the instantaneous sight pattern, the open or closed state of the eyelids can be detected by judging the apparent presence/ unpresence of the pupils, and the awakening degree of the viewer can be detected by the instantaneous sight pattern in the awakening degree detection circuit 13. When the awakening degree detection means detects the dozing state, the power supply of a display system is cut, or the power supply of the image display means is cut in the dozing state so that a sound output means is cut in the dozing state.
