SOLUTION: A light beam for information is generated by specially modulating the light beam according to the information to be recorded by means of a space optical modulation device 27 when recording. The optical beam for information is converged by an object lens 21 and an optical information recording medium 1 is irradiated with the beam while the beam is so converged that the diameter becomes minimum on the boundary plane between a transparent base plate 2 and a protective layer 5. A reference light beam for recording is converged by an object lens 31 and the optical information recording medium 1 is irradiated with the beam while the beam is so converged that the diameter becomes minimum on the boundary plane between the transparent base plate 2 and the protective layer 5. An interference pattern is formed in an information recording layer 3 by the interference of the light beam for information and the reference light beam for recording, and the interference pattern is volumetrically recorded in the information recording layer 3.

Thus, the ultrasonic wave is bent in the propagating direction of an incident laser basic wave or a second harmonic wave to turn ON, OFF the ultrasonic wave or to alter the amplitude. Thus, the intensity of the basic wave or its second harmonic wave can be modulated.
