    • PURPOSE:To decrease the number of character patterns to be recognized and to improve the processing speed by limiting a group of character pattern sequences according to a character evaluated value detected according to the arrangement relation of partial patterns in nearby areas by character candidate patterns and then performing character recognition. CONSTITUTION:A partial pattern extraction part 11 inputs character image data obtained from character strings on an information medium and extracts individual picture element areas in the character string image data as partial patterns. A character evaluated value detection part 12 sets character candidate patterns in order according to a combination of an aimed partial pattern where segmentation is started and partial patterns following the aimed partial pattern among partial patterns and detects the character evaluated value according to the arrangement relation of the partial patterns present in nearby areas of the character candidate pattern. Then, a candidate pattern sequence selecting means 13a selects a similar candidate pattern sequence among character candi date pattern sequences according to the character evaluated value. Namely, the character candidate pattern sequence to be recognized is limited. Consequent ly, the processing time can be shortened.

    • PURPOSE:To improve the precision of segmentation by obtaining the character evaluation value presenting the likeliness of characters in a prescribed character type in each unit area and determining the character type in each unit area based on the character evaluation value and dividing a character string pattern in variance positions of the character type. CONSTITUTION:A block extracting means 22 detects the position of a black block from the character string pattern, and a classification variance detecting means 24 divides the character string pattern to prescribed unit areas and obtains the character evaluation value expressing the likeliness of characters in the prescribed character type in each unit area to determine the character type in each unit area and divides the character string pattern in variance positions of the character type with respect to each character type to set classification areas. A segmentation position detecting means 26 detects the character segmentation positions corresponding to the character type in each classification area of the character string pattern based on the position of the black block and the character type of the classification area. Thus, proper character segmentation positions corresponding to the character type are obtained in each classification area, and the precision of segmentation is improved.

    • PURPOSE:To realize smooth binary reproduction with clear edge obtained in a line picture area and noise, etc., suppressed in a halftone area respectively by changing the characteristics of a space filter used by the feature value of the input picture signal and also changing the binarizing method. CONSTITUTION:A feature extracting means 102 extracts the feature value, e.g., the density gradient of the picture in an area near a noted picture element out of the input picture signal. A switching means 105 switches a space filter means 103 and 104 based on the feature value received from the means 102 for output of the multi-level picture signal where the noises are reduced at a flat part with sharp edges of pictures kept as they are. A binarizing means 108 and 109 perform the binarizing processes with a systematic dither method, a comparison method with the fixed threshold value, etc. A switching means 110 switches the means 108 and 109 by the feature value received from the means 102 for output of the binarized signal where the high contrast secured at a character part with the noises reduced at a photograph part respectively. Thus, it is possible to attain the binary reproduction of the smooth photograph part and the clear character part respectively despite the noises included in the input pictures.

    • PURPOSE:To improve the compressing rate of data by collating the respective patterns of local areas for the picture element which is an object to be approved with a specified pattern, and referring to the data of the picture elements adjacent to the picture element which is the object to be approved in different directions so as to approve in case of collating. CONSTITUTION:The input data of the respective picture elements A0-A8, which are the objects to be, approved is collated with the respective specified patterns by a ROM1. When the collated results shows disagreement, the input data of the object to be approved is set as effective output data and when it shows agreement, the input data of the picture element adjacent to one previous picture element in terms of the picture elements which are the objects to be approved in a first area data is set as the effective output data. The effective output data is collated with the respective specified patterns by a ROM2 and when the collated result shows disagreement the effective output data corresponding to the picture element which is the object to be approved is set as the approved data and when it shows agreement the effective output data of the picture element adjacent to other previous picture element in terms of the picture elements which are the objects to be approved in a second area data is set as the approved data. Thus, the compressing rate of data can be improved.
