    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent an extremely high speed rotation of an element as a part of a speed change mechanism when a hydraulic engaging device to be engaged in a high speed range is not engaged. SOLUTION: A control system for an automatic transmission comprises the speed change mechanism for outputting rotation of an input shaft to an output shaft after a speed change, a plurality of frictional engagement elements engaged and disengaged to establish each speed range of the speed change mechanism; a plurality of hydraulic servo devices for engaging and disengaging the frictional engagement elements respectively by supplying and draining an output oil pressure corresponding to an electrical signal supplied to solenoid valves; and an input shaft rotating speed detector and an output shaft rotating speed detector for detecting rotating speeds of the input shaft and output shaft respectively. When a command is sent to engage a high speed range frictional engagement element continuously engaged and coupled to the input shaft in a high speed range, out of the frictional engagement elements, a determination is made whether or not the rotating speed of the input shaft is not lower than an allowable value set in correspondence with the rotating speed of the output shaft in every speed range, and if it is not lower than the allowable value, a command is sent to disengage the high speed range frictional engagement element.
