    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a super-fine nano-periodic structure for surface modification of a dielectric material. SOLUTION: A first ultraviolet ray beam or visible light beam 5 and a second light beam 16 as the ultrashort pulsed laser beam are simultaneously applied to a surface of a dielectric material as a workpiece. Free electrons are generated on a surface of the dielectric material by applying the first light beam 5, and preferably, plasmon is generated by applying the second light beam 16 to form a nano-periodic structure on a surface of the dielectric material. The workpiece includes glass, organic polymer, ceramic, diamond or boron nitride. Further, when a metal or a semiconductor is added into the dielectric material or to a surface thereof, free electrons are distributed in advance in a vicinity of the surface to efficiently generate plasmon. An embodiment is possible, in which the second light beam 16 is formed of fundamental waves of the output of the ultrashort pulsed laser beam, and the first light beam 5 is formed of harmonic waves converted by a non-linear optical element or the like.     • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a laser beam second harmonic generator of high efficiency and high stability. SOLUTION: A reciprocation optical path is formed in a periodically polarized nonlinear optical crystal, such as, PPLT (periodically polarized lithium tantalate) doped with MgO or ZnO, PPSLT (stoichiometric PPLT) or PPLN (periodically polarized lithium niobate) or PPSLN (stoichiometric PPLN). The laser beam emitted from an optical fiber laser is inputted from one end surface of the crystal; the wavelength-converted higher harmonic is outputted from the same end surface; heat generation is equalized by passing of the laser beam through the reciprocating optical path; the temperature distribution is equalized within the nonlinear optical crystal; and therefore, wavelength matcning conditions are maintained, under the same conditions in the longitudinal direction.     • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a pulse high-repeating laser oscillator having stability which employs a thin-plate laser medium having low amplification gain.
      SOLUTION: The solid laser oscillator includes at least a pair of laser resonators; a thin-plate laser medium added with an active substance having a high-level lifetime longer than the period of a repeating operation as a laser medium; a thin-plate laser medium provided on at least one reflector in the laser resonator and a Q switch element provided in the resonator; an excitation source for exciting the laser medium; and a control section for driving the Q switch element. The control section causes oscillation when the Q switch element is in the ON-state, and turns off the Q switch during oscillation in which the high-level density of the active substance in the laser medium remains to interrupt the oscillation. When the Q switch is in the ON-state, the high-level excitation density is maintained so that the Q switch pulse can oscillate, and thus, stable high-repeating pulse oscillation can be achieved.
