    • PURPOSE:To perform rapid detection of deterioration of performance of an adsorbent and to perform proper fail safe by calculating a quantity of adsorptive heat of an adsorbent through detection of an exhaust gas temperature difference between the inlet part and the central part of the adsorbent and an amount of intake air, and effecting diagnosis of adsorbing capacity. CONSTITUTION:Exhaust gas from an engine 1 is guided to a muffler 8 through exhaust gas pipes 7a and 7b in which three-dimensional catalysts 9a and 9b, respectively, are located. A bypass passage bypassing an exhaust gas main passage 22 is branched in a position situated downstream from the muffler 8 and an adsorbent 24 is located in the branched passage to adsorb hydrocarbon. Through control of valves 25, 27, and 28, adsorption by the adsorbent 24 and introduction of eliminated HC to an intake system are controlled by a control unit 10. Further, a total quantity of adsorption heat of the adsorbent 24 is calculated based on a temperature difference between an inlet exhaust gas temperature sensor 41 and an outlet exhaust gas temperature sensor 43 or a central exhaust gas temperature sensor 42 and an amount of intake air, and through comparison of the calculated result with a target total quantity of adsorption heat, the presence of a trouble is decided according to the magnitude of the compared result. Deterioration of performance is rapidly detected through a self- diagnosis.

    • PURPOSE:To detect angles by an inexpensive sensor with few errors, by using a rotary body, wherein one or more teeth are omitted or angle data are not generated at an equal interval, and comparing the continuous angle data by a specified judging means. CONSTITUTION:A rotary angle sensor is constituted of a rotor 10a and a pickup coil 10b. In Figure A, one of teeth with an equal interval is omitted. In Figure B, the intervals between the teeth are partially unequal. The signal, which is detected by the pickup coil of the rotary sensor is shaped by a well known waveform shaping circuit in a control circuit. Then, the waveform shown in the Figure is obtained. The continuous angle data are compared by a judging means, and a reference crank position is detected based on the result. Thus the angle can be detecred by the inexpensive sensor with few errors.
