    • PURPOSE:To automatically align cores of single mode optical fibers by putting the center of the cores on coordinates and finding the location of the center numerally from video signals obtained by using a microscope and TV camera. CONSTITUTION:An observed image focussed on the core of the end part of an optical fiber 10 by means of a microscope 16 is photoelectrically scanned by the image pickup tube of a TV camera 18 and a video signal is generated. At this time, an intensity distribution which is produced when one scanning line 241 (or 242) scans a fiber image 100 is inputted into a computer 20. By using the computer 20, abscissas Z2 and Z3 corresponding to both sides of a bright part in the vicinity of the center of the observed image 100 are found, and then, coordinates D at almost center of the Z2 and Z3 are found. Thereafter, coordinates Z5 of the maximum value between the Z2 and D and Z3 and D are found and minimum values A1 and A2 between the D and Z5 and D and Z6 are found, and finally, the coordinates A0 of the center of the A1 and A2 are found. By moving the optical fibers 10 so that the coordinates A0 of right side and left side optical fibers 10 coincide with each other, the cores are automatically aligned.

    • PURPOSE:To realize energy saving of a connecting work by irradiating parallel rays from the side face of a pair of opposed optical fibers, photodetecting its transmission ray, recognizing a core position, executing an alignment, and concentrating a necessary device on a connecting part. CONSTITUTION:When parallel rays are irradiated to an optical fiber consisting of a core 2 and a clad 3, the outside line of the core 2 becomes a total dark part like q0 shown in the figure and its position is recognized. Therefore, a parallel ray irradiating mechanism 2 and a photodetecting mechanism 3 are placed symmetrically on a pair of opposed optical fibers 1a, 1b, and parallel rays R are irradiated, a bright and dark distribution appears on the photodetecting mechanism 3, a position of the core is recognized, the connecting end part of the optical fibers 1a, 1b is adjusted finely, and the alignment is exeucted. Therefore, even in case of a long fiber, it is unnecessary to place hands and a measuring instrument in the end part, an apparatus can be concentrated on the connecting part, and energy saving is realized.

    • PURPOSE:To prevent occurrence of minute scars in the course of connecting optical fibers by fusion and improve the strength of the connected part, by performing the heating and fusion of optical fibers under an inactivated atmosphere. CONSTITUTION:A chamber 10 to be used for creating an inactivated atmosphere is a square box type one made of, for example, transparent quartz, and composed of a main body 12 and top part 14 coupled with the main body by means of a hinge 16. Two optical fibers 20 to be connected with each other are inserted into the chamber 10 through holes 18 installed at the boundary of the main body 12 and top part 14. The optical fibers 20 are fused and connected with each other by arc discharge of tungsten electrodes 30 while an inactive gas is made to flow by blowing in the chamber 10. After the optical fibers 20 are connected by fusion, the top part 14 is opened and the connected optical fiber 20 is taken out. In this case, the strength of the connected part by fusion can be improved as shown by the graph where the Weibull distribution A when the fusion is made by the arc discharge under an Ar gas atmosphere and that B when fusion is made in air are shown.

    • PURPOSE:To obtain an optical multiplexer and demultiplexer which requires the precise work of only the polishing of a slanting end surface of an optical fiber while the number of parts is decreased, by providing the optical fiber with the function of a prism. CONSTITUTION:The end surface of the optical fiber 20 is polished to obtain the slanting surface with an angle alpha, and an optical filter 21 which is not an unnecessary light absorption type and has wavelength selectivity such as an interference filter and a dichroic mirror is vapor-deposited on the slanting surface. Then, lenses 23 and 24 and optical fibers 25 and 26 are arranged at a specific angle theta; sintheta=nsinalpha, where (n) is the refractive index of the core of the optical fiber 20. When this is used as a demultiplexer, light signals with wavelength lambda1 and wavelength lambda2 are entered at the angle theta of incidence by a lens 23 from the optical fiber 25; the light signal with the wavelength lambda1 propagate in the filter 21 and optical fiber 20 and the light signal with the wavelength lambda2 is reflected by the filter 21 to enter the lens 24 and then enters the optical fiber to be demultiplexed from each other.

CONSTITUTION:A cavity is formed by a specified length (l) from the end part of a hard aluminum pipe 1 in a bushing 8 having such a hole part wherein an optical fiber cable 4 in a hard aluminum pipe 5 is held at the center thereof. An expandable plastic 9, for example, PE or the like contg. a foaming agent is packed in the cavity, and is heated with a heating means such as a heater from the outside so as to expand, whereby the inside of the cavity is packed with the foamed plastic 9-b. It is also possible to hold the optical fiber cable roughly at the center of an adapter by packing the expandable plastic into the adapter and heating the same from the outside so as to expand thereby packing the inside of the cavity.
