摘要： PURPOSE:To obtain the space optical modulating element which is not attenuated and has a high contrast and memory function at a high speed by disposing a photoconductive film and liquid crystal oriented film on one of glass substrates having transparent electrodes and the liquid crystal oriented film on the other glass substrate having transparent electrodes and packing a ferroelectric liquid crystal between both the liquid crystal oriented films. CONSTITUTION:This optical modulating element is formed by disposing the photoconductive film 12 and the liquid crystal oriented film 15 deposited on the one glass substrate having the transparent electrodes, disposing the liquid crystal oriented film 15' on the other glass substrate 11', disposing the liquid crystal oriented films 15 and 15' to face each other and packing the ferroelectric liquid crystal 14 into the spacing between these liquid crystal oriented films 15 and 15'. Namely, the non-polar photoconductive film 12 formed by deposition of the space optical modulating element is formed as a photosensitive layer, by which the response speed of the photosensitive layer 12 is increased. In addition, the operating speed of the space optical modulating element is increased by using the ferroelectric liquid crystal 14 having the high-speed responsiveness. On the other hand, the space optical modulating element is driven by the control pulses at which the pulses impressed to the ferroelectric liquid crystal 14 attain the threshold value exhibiting a self-holding characteristic at the time of the writing, by which the sufficient memory characteristic is provided.

摘要： PURPOSE:To provide the optical exclusive OR circuit which can make an exclusive OR operation between two light input signals. CONSTITUTION:Two sets of the light beams propagating in space or in waveguides or in optical fibers are formed as 1st to 4th sets of light beams and are guided to an optical inverter element array constituted of a 1st set of an optical inverter element 1V1k and a 2nd set of an optical inverter element 1V2k. The optical inverter element array is inputted with these 1st to 4th sets of the light beams and output these beams by lowering the light transmittance or light reflectivity thereof. The output light beams are multiplexed by an optical output section OT and are outputted. Consequently, the exclusive OR operation of two sets of the light signals is eventually executed at a high speed by effectively utilizing the wide band characteristics of the optical elements and since the circuits are constituted of only the elements having the inverter functions, the computation of the exclusive OR by one stage of operation is executed and the need for obtaining synchronization between the elements is eliminated. In addition, the circuitry is simplified and the integration of the circuits is facilitated.

摘要： PURPOSE:To constitute a light gate of a single 'pin' structure by using a MQW - 'pin' structure of a high quenching ratio. CONSTITUTION:A (p) layer 33 of a multiple quantum well (MQW) modulator 3 and a (p ) semiconductor substrate 1 are connected to each other by a first electrode 5 via an insulating film 4, and a second electrode 6 is drawn out of an (n) layer 23 of a photodiode 2. Input light Pin is irradiated on the photodiode 2 from a side of the (p ) semiconductor substrate 1, and output light Pout is radiated as reflected light of bias light Pbias irradiated on the MQW modulator 3. In the case of the input light Pin being absorbed by the (p ) semiconductor substrate 1, it is transmitted by a method wherein the (p ) semiconductor substrate 1 is partially etched. Accordingly, a light gate array of a high quenching ratio, having a gain and memorizing property, and of simple constitution can be obtained.
