摘要： PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To sufficiently reduce a smoke generation amount at the changeover transient time between first combustion and second combustion. SOLUTION: In first combustion, an EGR gas amount to be supplied into a combustion chamber 5 exceeds an EGR gas amount showing a peak value of a soot generation amount, hardly causing the soot. In second combustion, the EGR amount to be supplied into the combustion chamber 5 is less than the EGR gas amount showing the peak value of the soot generation amount. A changeover means is arranged for selectively switching the first combustion and the second combustion. A smoke concentration sensor 37 is arranged for sensing the concentration of the smoke discharged from an engine body 1. Combustion parameters are feedback-controlled so as to lower the smoke concentration based on the sensed smoke concentration value, at the changeover transient time between the first combustion and the second combustion.

摘要： PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To quickly increase quantity of fine particulates free to oxidate and remove more than the discharging quantity of fine particulates by adopting a novel method. SOLUTION: A particulate filter 22 is arranged in an engine exhaust passage. Quantity of fine particulates to be discharged from a combustion chamber 5 per unit hour is made less than quantity of fine particulates free to oxidate and remove which can be oxidated and removed without generating luminous flame per unit hour on the particulate filter, and consequently, fine particulates in exhaust gas is oxidated and removed without generating luminous flame when they flow in the particulate filter. An engine control parameter capable of changing quantity of fine particulates free to oxidate and remove is selected when quantity of the fine particulates free to oxidate and remove becomes less than quantity of the fine particulates to discharge. The selected engine control parameter is changed.

摘要： An object of the invention is to achieve improved heating of the exhaust gas purification apparatus without making the structure of a burner complex or bulky. The system according to the invention is equipped with a burner 20 arranged in an exhaust passage upstream of an exhaust gas purification apparatus 6 and having a burner combustion chamber in which flame is produced. At the time of raising the temperature of the exhaust gas purification apparatus 6, the burner 20 is caused to produce flame that extends from the interior of the burner combustion chamber to the interior of the exhaust passage 3 upstream of the exhaust gas purification apparatus 6 when the flow rate of the exhaust gas is not higher than a predetermined flow rate, and the burner 20 is caused to make the size of the flame produced in the interior of the exhaust passage 3 smaller than when it is determined that the flow rate of the exhaust gas is not higher than the predetermined flow rate or to produce flame only in the interior of the burner combustion chamber when it is determined that the flow rate of exhaust gas is higher than the predetermined flow rate.
