    • PURPOSE:To dispense with pipe lines, etc., which connect a pump to an oil tank and simplify the structure around the pump by providing communication passages on pump installing parts which are arranged on a base body ranging the oil tank and an oil pan. CONSTITUTION:An oil tank 15 is installed in the vicinity of an oil pan 14, while a base body K is provided so as to range the oil tank 15 and the oil pan 14. Pump installing parts B, C for installation of discharge pumps 18, 19 and an oil supply pump 24 are provided on the base body K. A first communication passage 14g which communicates the discharge sides of the discharge pumps 18, 19 with the inside of the oil tank 15 and a second communication passage 208 which communicates the intake side of the oil supply pump 24 with the inside of the oil tank 15 are provided on the pump installing parts B and C. Pipe lines, etc., which connect discharge pumps 18, 19 or the oil supply pump 24 to the inside of the oil tank 15 are thus disused, space for the pipe lines, etc., is secured with facility and the structure is simplified.

    • PURPOSE:To always detect right ignition timing by obtaining the ignition timing from a rotating part, which is not changed by advance and delay timing values, in the case of each intake and exhaust cam shaft made with its advance or delay timing value independently possible. CONSTITUTION:In a control circuit 82, from a signal theta1 of a crank angle sensor and a rotational angle signal theta2 of a cam shaft, any of the transistor units 88 is turned on prior to ignition timing of the first and fourth cylinders and off in the ignition timing. At the time of this off-operation, high voltage is induced in one coil of a coil unit 90, and spark ignition is generated in spark plugs 92a, 92d of a simultaneous ignition cylinder connected to a secondary side of the coil. While, when the other transistor of the unit 88 is turned off, a spark is generated in spark plugs 92b, 92c of the other simultaneous ignition cylinder. Thus because a rotary angle of cam shafts 16, 18 is detected from an external cam unit 36A in a part integrally rotated with a crankshaft of timing selecting mechanisms 24, 26, in no relation to their operative condition, the ignition timing can be detected to a fixed position for the crankshaft.

    • PURPOSE:To improve degree of freedom in the arrangement of a water pump by attaching a water pump to the side face of a cylinder block, and supplying cooling water to a jacket for a cylinder head by means of a cooling water passage independently provided of a jacket for the block. CONSTITUTION:A water pump 120 is arranged so that it is located at the front side of an engine E and the axis 121 of rotation thereof is located in parallel to a crank shaft 6. The water pump 120 is rotated in accordance with the rotation of the crank shaft 6 through a chain or the like. At the air intake side of the water pump 120, a water inlet 123 provided with an adjusting valve 125 incorporating a thermostat 126 is provided and connected to an outlet side of a radiator 5 through a piping 124. The discharge port 129 of the water pump 120 is connected to a cooling water inlet 131 provided on the side face of a vehicle front side of a cylinder block 7. Cooling water is supplied to a cooling water passage 132 formed in a cylinder head 11 through a cooling water passage 131 formed in the cylinder block 7 from this inlet 130a.

    • PURPOSE:To restrict shocking action exerted on an engine body in case of collision taking place in the front part of a car frame, by connecting an intake passage forming member to the front side of cylinders and connecting to the front side thereof a surge tank formed with a plastic material. CONSTITUTION:A lateral-row type engine unit 3 is mounted on a car frame with the shaft line of its crank shaft extending in the lateral direction. An intake device 13 is arranged in front of a cylinder head 5e and an intake manifold 15 is also connected to the front side of the cylinder head 5e. A throttle device 17 is connected to the front side of the intake manifold 15 and a surge tank 18 is connected to the front side of the throttle device 17 via a joint 19. The surge tank 18 is made of such a material as aluminum or synthetic resin having plasticity. When the front portion of a car body comes in collision, the surge tank 18 is crushed to absorb shock so that any shocking action exerted on an engine 5 can be restricted.

    • PURPOSE:To lower the whole height of an engine by arranging an output shaft rotting monolithically with a crank shaft in a specified condition with respect to a differential device and the like, and thereby concurrently devising a means and the like in such a way that a rotor of a large dismeter and the main shaft of an automatic transmission are arranged on the center line of the output shaft. CONSTITUTION:In an engine 22, the rotation of a crank shaft 26 is transmitted to paired right and left driving wheels via an automatic transmission 65 and a differential device 80. In this case, an output shaft 34 rotating monolithically with the crank shaft 26 is arranged in parallel with the crank shaft 26 in the opposite side of the differential device 80 while the crank shaft 26 is being held. Following which, a torque converter 72 as a rotor of a large diameter and the main shaft 70 of the automatic transmission 68 are arranged on the center line of the output shaft 34, and the torque converter 72 is concurrently over-lapped onto the crank shaft 26 when viewed from the side. In addition, with respect to the crank shaft 26, the output shaft 34 is arranged upward, and the center of the differential device 80 is arranged downward. Furthermore, a cylinder block 28 is so tilted as to cover the upper side of the differential device 80.
