    • PURPOSE: To obtain the titled compound useful as a raw material for a nucleic acid seasoning, etc. industrially and advantageously, by epimerizing an aqueous solution of D-arabinose in the presence of molybdenum ions under heating, and separating the reaction solution with a muitivaient metallic cation exchanger column.
      CONSTITUTION: An aqueous solution of D-arabinose is subjected to the epimerization in the presence of molydbenum ions, e.g. anion exchanger fibers supporting the molybdenum ions, under heating and filtered. The resultant filtrate is then desalted with an ion exchange resin to give a transparent aqueous solution containing a mixture of D-ribose with pentose. The resultant aqueous solution is then passed through a column of a di- or trivalent metallic cation exchanger, e.g. an ion exchanger prepared by treating a polyvinylsulfonic acid type cation exchange resin with an aqueous solution of calcium chloride, to separate D-arabinose (I), D- ribose (II) and D-xylose and D-lyxose (III).
