    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To determine whether a trouble of an EGR gas cooling system is caused by dropping of cooling performance of an EGR cooler or by dropping of capability of an EGR cooling water pump. SOLUTION: An EGR device for an engine provided with the EGR gas cooling system 14 including an EGR cooling water channel 11, the EGR cooling water pump 12, and the EGR cooler 13, is provided with a gas temperature detection means 17 detecting gas temperature at a gas outlet of the EGR cooler 13, an engine rotation speed detection means 19 detecting engine rotation speed, an abnormality detection means 18 judging abnormality of the EGR gas cooling system 14 based on gas temperature detected by the gas temperature detection means 17, and a cause specifying means 18 specifying whether abnormality of the EGR gas cooling system 14 detected by the abnormality detection means 18 is caused by drop of capacity of the EGR cooling water pump 12 or is caused by a cooling capacity of the EGR cooler 13 based on the engine rotation speed when the abnormality detection means 18 judges abnormality.     • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To determine whether or not failure exists in an EGR device, an injection valve for supplying fuel into an intake passage, and an injection valve for supplying the fuel into cylinders, respectively, and when failure exists, take adequate measures according thereto. SOLUTION: A control apparatus for an internal combustion engine includes an in-passage injection valve for injecting the fuel into the intake passage; and an in-cylinder injection valve for injecting the fuel into the cylinders. The control apparatus stops the supply of EGR gas when failure exists in the air-fuel ratio of exhaust gas. When the air-fuel ratio of the exhaust gas thereafter is normal, the control apparatus determines that failure exists in the EGR device, and inhibits the supply of the EGR gas. When failure exists in the air-fuel ratio of the exhaust gas, the control apparatus performs feedback control while supplying the fuel only from either of the injection valves. When the learning value at this point exceeds a predetermined value, the control apparatus determines that failure exists in the injection valve performing the fuel supply. When failure exists in the in-passage injection valve, the control apparatus stops the fuel supply from the injection valve, and changes the operating point to a high-rotation and low-load side.     • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a technology capable of diagnosing an exhaust throttle valve opening failure and a low-pressure EGR valve closing failure at the same time separately from each other in a failure diagnosing device for an internal combustion engine.
      SOLUTION: In deceleration of an internal combustion engine, an exhaust throttle valve is closed as much as possible and while a low-pressure EGR valve is opened full (S102). In the case wherein a change amount of the quantity of fresh air detected by an air flow meter is smaller than a predetermined quantity (S103-YES) and the exhaust pressure detected by an exhaust pressure sensor is lower than a predetermined pressure (S104-YES), an opening failure of the exhaust throttle valve is diagnosed (S105). In the case wherein a change amount of the quantity of fresh air detected by the air flow meter is smaller than the predetermined quantity (S103-YES) and the exhaust pressure detected by the exhaust pressure sensor is higher than the predetermined pressure (S104-NO), a closing failure of the low-pressure EGR valve is diagnosed (S106).
