      [Solution] A two-speed transmission includes: an input member capable of rotating with respect to a fixed portion; an output member coaxial with the input member and capable of relative rotation therewith; a rotating member coaxial with the input member and the output member and capable of relative rotation therewith; a first engaging device configured to switch engagement between a first friction plate and a second friction plate to switch between a state in which the input member and the rotating member rotate integrally or relative to each other; a second engaging device configured to switch the rotating member to a rotatable or non-rotatable state; an elastic biasing means configured to apply a force pressing the first friction plate and the second friction plate against each other; a pressing device configured to release the pressing force; a first bearing between the elastic biasing means and the pressing device; a second bearing between the rotating member and the pressing device or the fixed portion; and a planetary speed reduction mechanism having a sun element connected to the input member or the rotating member, a carrier connected to one of the input member or the rotating member and the output member, and a ring element connected to the other of these.

    • In an outboard motor having a power transmission mechanism for transmitting power of an engine to a propeller, the power transmission mechanism has a transmission ratio changing unit having a transmission ratio changing planetary gear train including a transmission ratio changing sun gear, transmission ratio changing planetary gears, and a transmission ratio changing internal gear. The transmission ratio changing internal gear is connected to an input side shaft on the engine side. The transmission ratio changing planetary gears are connected to an output side shaft on the propeller side. The transmission ratio changing sun gear is connected to a stationary portion via a one-way clutch. The transmission ratio changing planetary gears and the transmission ratio changing internal gear and/or the transmission ratio changing sun gear are connected by an on-off clutch. When the on-off clutch is disengaged, the one-way clutch is engaged and the speed from the input side shaft is outputted from the output side shaft with a reduced speed. When the on-off clutch is engaged, the one-way clutch is disengaged and the speed from the input side shaft is outputted from the output side shaft with the same speed.

    • A variable ratio epicyclic drive transmission comprises a drive shaft (10), a driven shaft (11), a sun wheel (12) fixed on the driven shaft (11), a stationary outer ring member co-axial with said shafts, a planet carrier (15) fixed to the drive shaft (10) and three planet wheels (19) swing mounted on said carrier and in engagement with said ring member. The ring member comprises an almost complete, but broken, substantially circular loop of chain (14) engaged by said planet wheels (19) and supported by a contractile iris structure permitting the diameter of the loop to be varied while maintaining its circularity. The preferred iris structure comprises a circular array of guide blocks (27) in which the chain may slide, two circular hoops (25, 26) surrounding the array of guide blocks and pivotal links (28) supporting the blocks from the hoops such that rotation of one hoop relative to the other causes the array of blocks to change diameter. The ring member also comprises joint means (20) comprising a tail guide and escapement devices (Fig. 3) enabling chain to be drawn from or fed into the loop one link at a time. Short bridging racks (47) span the break in the loop at the tail joint means to maintain continuity of engagement of the ring member by the planet wheels as they pass the joint means. The planet wheels (19) are swing mounted on the planet carrier and continuously urged into engagement with the chain loop. The motion of the planet wheels (19) is transferred to the sun wheel (12) by (in respect of each planet wheel) a first transfer gear (53) fixed relative to and coaxial with the planet wheel, a second transfer gear (54) mounted for rotation about the swing mounting axis of the planet wheel in engagement with the first transfer gear (53) and a slave gear (55) fixed relative to and coaxial with said second transfer gear (54) and in engagement with the sun wheel (12).

    • Epicyclic change-speed transmission which can include a sequence of either biratio stages, of quadriratio stages, or a combination of both. Each biratio stage has one binary selectable means, one reactive, one input, and one output component. Each quadriratio stage has two binary selectable means, two reactive, one input, and one output component. The maximum ratio of the transmission results when the reactive components of the stages are grounded to the casing. When the reactive components of the plurality of stages are coupled to their input and output components in binary logic sequence, an incrementally decreasing variable speed ratio of the input/output members of the transmission will result, that far exceeds the number of stages. The basic stage ratio is defined by the maximum ratio of, and the number of biratio stages in the particularly defined transmission sequence, with the state ratios of the stages being of a particularly defined order. The total number of incremental changes in the ratio of the transmission is also particularly defined.

    • An outboard motor comprising a power transmission mechanism transmitting the power of an engine to a propeller. The transmission unit of the power transmission mechanism comprises a one row of planetary gear train for transmission having a sun gear for transmission, planetary gears for transmission, and an internal gear for transmission. The internal gear for transmission is connected to an engine side input shaft, the planetary gears for transmission are connected to a propeller side output shaft, the sun gear for transmission is connected to a fixed part through a one-way clutch, and the planetary gears for transmission, the internal gear for transmission, and/or the sun gear for transmission are connected to each other through an engagement/disengagement clutch. Accordingly, when the engagement/disengagement clutch is disengaged, the one-way clutch is engaged, and the speed of the input shaft is reduced and output from the output shaft. When the engagement/disengagement clutch is engaged, the one-way clutch is disengaged, and the speed of the input shaft is output from the output shaft at a same speed.
