摘要： A radiation, explosives, and special materials, detection and identification system includes a housing supporting one or more gamma sensors and one or more solid-state neutron sensors proximate to container contents under examination. The system collects radiation data from the sensors and compares the collected data to one or more stored spectral images representing one or more isotopes to identify one or more isotopes present. The identified one or more isotopes present are corresponded to possible materials or goods that they represent. The possible materials or goods are compared with the manifest relating to the container to confirm the identity of materials or goods contained in the container or to detect and/or identify unauthorized materials or goods in the container. A battery powered sensor arrangement is also disclosed.

摘要： An electron gun (10) that suppresses the non-linear space charge forces and phase-dependant focusing forces that are chiefly responsible for the high emittance of conventional electron guns. The gun comprises a resonant microwave cavity (15), a cathode (12) mounted in the cavity wall, and a momentum analyzer system (17). The resonant microwave cavity, when supplied with microwave power, supports an electromagnetic field having a high-gradient electric component directed along an acceleration axis. The cavity is formed with an exit aperture (32) at a location relative to the cathode such that emitted electrons are accelerated along the axis and pass through the exit aperture. The cavity length is chosen to allow the microwave field within the cavity volume to accelerate the electrons to an energy of about 0.5-1.0 MeV prior to the electrons' passing through the aperture. Bunching is provided by the momentum analyzer. An electron emerging from the cavity has an energy determined by the phase of the microwave field at the time of that electron's emission. Those electrons having energies corresponding to the desired inital phase value are permitted to pass through the momentum analyzer, thereby forming a prebunched electron beam for injection into a linear accelerator.

The photocathode is constructed of a metal (e.g., nickel) that emits electrons only in response to far-uv radiation of 140 nanometer or shorter wavelengths. A window (e.g., magnesium fluoride) is positioned at the entrance to the photodiode, to filter out far-uv radiation with wavelengths shorter than about 100 nanometers. The window and photocathode material serve to make the photodiode sensitive to radiation in a wavelength range no greater than 100 to 140 nanometers. A high-temperature perfluoroethylene material is used as an insulating layer for spacing the window from the anode and for spacing the anode from the photocathode. The photodiode is used in a gas chromatography detector.

The detector (14) generates an analog signal in response to the detection of a trace sample, such as an ionized molecule or a beam of light. The processor (18) determines a baseline value and threshold value. Portions of the analog signal at or below the threshold are assigned the baseline value. The threshold typically corresponds to a value above the noise level in the system. The detector (14) thus removes undesirable noise from the readout value.
