    • A sliding jaw chuck assembly (10) for heavy duty applications has a plurality of radially slidable jaw mounts (16) each actuated by an L-shaped lever (40) mounted for rocking movement about a supporting trunnion (50). The chuck assembly (10) includes a sealed housing subassembly (24,26,28) which encloses a sliding jaw subassembly (14). The sliding jaw subassembly (14) utilizes a plurality of master slides (16), each slide having a jaw support portion (106) and a counterweight support portion (72) interconnected by a bridge (74). A gripping jaw (22) is releasably secured to the jaw support portion and a counterweight (76) is releasably secured to the counterweight supporting portion.

    • The chuck includes a body with an axial recess and a transverse opening intersecting the recess. First and second cam members are disposed at least partially within the transverse opening and have first and second passages, respectively, which squeeze a cylindrical, slitted inner sleeve that holds the tool shank during rotation of the chuck. The inner sleeve is spring-biased for axial movement relative to the body and has a tapered upper end that is compressed when engaging a tapered retainer sleeve and thereby retains the tool shank during nonrotation of the chuck. An outer sleeve including comolded inner and outer shells, is configured and disposed to move axially about the body. A remote actuating member effects axial movement of the outer sleeve and inner sleeves to permit insertion or withdrawal of the tool shank from the chuck. An engagement mechanism connects the chuck to a drive spindle and also has a mounting mechanism for facilitating automated mounting of the chuck to a drive spindle.

    • A high speed system (50) for drilling of very small holes in workpieces (137) such as printed circuit boards. The X-Y positioning system includes air bearings (120) to provide lift between the stationary guide beams (60, 62), the cross beam (65), and the top table (70), and further includes a vacuum preloading apparatus (128). The top table (70) is a light honeycomb structure (71, 72, 73), whose effective rigidity is virtually that of the guide beams (60, 62) due to the vacuum preloading. The system (50) includes a conventional spindle (85) and a high speed spindle (81). The high speed spindle (81) includes a stationary body (156) carrying the stator (195, 196) of the drive motor. Only the spindle rotor (160) is translated along the Z axis to perform drilling movements. The rotor (160) is supported within the body (156) by rotary and linear air bearings (179, 187), and is axially driven by a linear motor (210, 220). A tool changer (95) loaded by clips (350) carrying the drilling bits (400) is mounted on the top work table (70). A vacuum hold-down apparatus (140) secures the workpieces (137) to a drilling station.
