    • A process for producing chlorine comprising the step of oxidizing hydrogen chloride in a gas containing hydrogen chloride with a gas containing oxygen in the presence of a catalyst, wherein the oxidation of hydrogen chloride is carried out in at least two reaction zones each comprising a catalyst-packed layer, which are arranged in series, and a temperature in at least one of said reaction zones is controlled with a heat exchange system. According to this process, the stable activity of the catalyst is maintained and chlorine can be stably obtained at a high yield since the excessive hot spot in the catalyst-packed layer is suppressed and the catalyst-packed layer can be effectively used.

    • The invention relates to a method for producing chlorine by means of catalytic gas phase oxidation. Said method comprises the following steps: a) a feed gas stream I containing hydrogen chloride and a feed gas stream II containing oxygen are provided; b) feed gas stream I, feed gas stream II, an optional back flow Ia containing hydrogen chloride, and an optional back flow IIa containing oxygen are fed into a first oxidation zone and are contacted with a first oxidation catalyst in a first oxidation stage in which a first partial quantity of the hydrogen chloride oxidizes into chlorine while a gas stream III is obtained that contains chlorine, unreacted oxygen, unreacted hydrogen chloride, and steam; c) gas stream III is fed into a second oxidation zone and is contacted with at least one additional oxidation catalyst in a second oxidation stage in which a second partial quantity of the hydrogen chloride oxidizes into chlorine while a product gas stream IV is obtained that contains chlorine, unreacted oxygen, unreacted hydrogen chloride, and steam; d) chlorine, optionally back flow Ia, and optionally back flow IIa are recovered from product gas stream IV. The inventive method is characterized in that the first oxidation catalyst used in the first oxidation zone is provided in a fluidized bed while the additional oxidation catalyst/s used in the second oxidation zone is/are provided in a fixed bed.
