    • A stacked alkali metal thermoelectric converter having a tubular shell (54) with a beta˝-alumina solid tubular electrolyte (10) which passes sodium ions, but not electrons, centrally disposed in the shell (54); a tubular wick (38) disposed within the electrolyte (10); a tubular electrode (18) encircling the electrolyte (10) for supply­ing electrons to the sodium ions that pass through the electrolyte (10); a grid (48) encircling the electrode (18) to conduct electrons from the inner wick (38) through an external load and to the electrode (18); an outer wick (52) disposed adjacent the shell (54) and spaced from the grid (48); a transition piece (44) dividing the electrolyte (10), electrode (18) and grid (48) into two cells; a pump (60) which pumps sodium from a low pressure and temperature outer side to a high pressure and temperature inner side of the tubular electrolyte and electrode (10 & 18); sodium traveling to the wicks (38 & 52) as a vapor as current flows in the cells due to the separate flow of sodium ions and electrons in the cells when connected to a heat source and heat sink.
