摘要： There has conventionally been a problem that a servo pit of a magnetic recording medium needs to be recorded for each disk, and therefore the time is long and the cost is high. A magneto-optical recording medium of a constitution having a recording film at least in a film surface vertical direction on a disk substrate, on which a format signal is formed by changing the magnetization direction or the magnetic anisotropicity of the recording film or by oxidizing the recording film in a pit form and its recording/reproducing method are disclosed. With the constitution, an excellent characteristic magnetic recording medium such that the productivity and cost of the disk can be greatly improved and a stable servo characteristic can be achieved is realized.

摘要： A record carrier (40) of a removable type has an information plane that is provided with a pattern of an electro-magnetic material constituting an array of bit locations (11). The presence or absence of said material at the information plane represents the value of a bit location. The device has an interface surface (32) for cooperating with the information plane. The interface surface is provided with an array of electro-magnetic sensor elements (54,56) that are sensitive to the presence of said electro-magnetic material within a near-field working distance. The record carrier and device system have alignment means (38,41) for positioning the bit locations near the sensor elements within the near-field working distance between a bit location and the corresponding sensor when the record carrier is mounted in the device.

摘要： A digital data storage device comprises a conductive probe having a tip closely spaced from, and movable relative to, a flat storage surface exposed to a fluid containing a plurality of discretely attachable molecules. The probe is selectively pulsed to cause molecules to be captured from the fluid and removably attached to selected sites on said surface to write data bits at said sites in the form of surface irregularities. To read the bits so written, the probe and substrate are voltage biased to cause a tunnel electron current to flow between the probe tip and surface; whereupon variations in said current (and/or tip position if the tip is feedback-controlled to maintain a constant distance above the surface) are measured and detected to denote the states of the bits. The bits are selectively erased by energising the probe with a pulse of appropriate voltage, thereby detaching molecules at selected sites without damage to the surface for restoring the surface at said sites substantially to its original flat configuration. A low bias voltage is maintained between the tip and storage surface during reading.

The position information is constructed from first line segments, which are parallel to each other, and a second line segment, which crosses the first line segments. By this, a position of a head in a Y direction is recognized.
