    • A diffracting device consists of a substrate made of LiTaO 3 , an optical waveguide extending in a central upper side of the substrate for transmitting 860 nm wavelength coherent light radiated from a semiconductor laser, a plurality of gratings periodically arranged on the optical waveguide at regular intervals, and a covering layer arranged on the gratings and the optical waveguide. The optical waveguide is formed according to a proton-exchange process. The gratings are made of photoresist material having a refractive index N1=1.5 and a high workability, and the gratings are uniformly formed according to an interference-exposure process. Therefore, the photoresist material is patterned without damaging the optical waveguide with reactive ions. The covering layer is made of Ta 2 O 5 having a refractive index N2=2.0. Therefore, periodic change in the refractive index is generated in a periodic structure of the gratings and the covering layer, and a part of the coherent light is reflected by the periodic structure to fix the wavelength of the coherent light radiated from the semiconductor laser.

    • A display device comprises a liquid crystal spatial light modulator (1) associated with diffractive means, such as a diffraction grating comprising grating elements (5). The diffraction grating is illuminated by a light source (6, 7) and each element is chirped and blazed so as to separate the primary colours of the illuminating light and direct them to individual light-modulating elements (R, G, B) of the modulator (1). By dispensing with conventional colour filters, the efficiency of the display device is improved. Further, the focusing action of the grating elements (5) directs light to the elements of the modulator (1) so as to prevent light wastage caused by blocking of light by opaque regions of the display.
