摘要： A multimode optical fiber for UV light transmission, able to be sterilized with gamma radiation, has a core including undoped synthetic silica, a cladding including fluorine doped synthetic silica, a hydrogen contcnt higher than 5 x 10 molecules/cm and a metal coating that retards diffusion of hydrogen outwardly from the fiber, the metal being selected from aluminum, copper, zinc, tin, silver and gold. The metal coating has a high diffusion coefficient below 150 DEG and a low diffusion coefficient at a hydrogen loading temperature above 250 DEG C. The optical fiber may have a high-OH content of 50 to 1500 ppm and a low-OH content below 50 ppm after treatment. The optical fiber may also or alternatively have a low-OH content below 50 ppm, and preferably below 5 ppm, before treatment. A gamma radiation sterilized multimode fiber bundle may include a plurality of such optical fibers. A gamma radiation sterilized catheter may include at least one optical fiber or a fiber bundle. A process for producing the gamma radiation sterilized fibers includes manufacturing a preform having a core including undoped synthetic silica and a cladding including fluorine doped silica; drawing the preform into a fiber and annealing the fiber for reducing drawing-induced UV defects; coating the fiber with a metal coating thercby retarding migration of hydrogen outwardly from the fiber. A delivery system for transporting light including at least one optical fiber and apparatus for transporting light using the delivery system are also described.

摘要： Embodiments of the present invention are directed to staggered arrays of laser diode bars positioned on stepped support structures. Optical waveguides may direct the outputs of the individual diode bars to a desired location, for example, a common output plane. The optical waveguides may be glass plates in certain embodiments. Waste heat generated by the diode bars may be removed from the support structures at certain locations and as a result, the diode bars may be closely positioned with respect to each other. By closely positioning the laser diode bars and directing the diode bar outputs to a desired orientation, the effective brightness and fluence may be increased for a given output area and operational power compared to the prior art. Associated methods of manufacturing staggered array couplers and producing highpower pump energy are also described.

摘要： An optical fiber for transmitting ultraviolet ray, comprising a core (5) formed of a silica glass containing a specified amount of fluorine and a clad (6a) formed of a silica glass containing a specified amount of fluorine or boron, a clad (6b) using an ultraviolet ray transmitting resin, or a clad (6c) having hollow holes (H), a protective layer installed on the outer periphery of the clad, and a protective layer covering layer further installed on the protective layer, wherein hydrogen treatment is applied to the core, clad, and protective layer so that the core, clad, and protective cover are not deteriorated, particularly, by the radiation of ultraviolet ray with high transmittance, whereby first the transmittance of ultraviolet ray of the optical fiber can be increased and the deterioration of the optical fiber by the radiation of ultraviolet ray thereon can be eliminated and second vacuum ultraviolet ray and deep ultraviolet ray can be propagated with a high transmittance, the deterioration by the radiation of ultraviolet ray thereon can be reduced, and a prescribed sharp part can be formed at the tip part of the optical fiber by etching; an optical fiber probe (1), comprising a sharp part (3) formed by sharpening the tip part of the optical fiber (2) with etchant and a metallic film (4) for light shielding formed on the outer peripheral surface of the sharp part (3).

摘要： The specification describes optical fibers that are constructed to prevent theft of optical signals. One construction is designed to block access of the core (61) of the fiber to the "writing" radiation necessary to form a grating tap. In this embodiment the optical fiber cladding (62-66) is provided with a highly absorbing UV layer (65). In a variation of this embodiment, one or more additional optical paths (68) are provided in the optical fiber to accommodate monitoring signals. The added optical paths (68) allow monitoring signals to be transmitted in the optical fiber, separate from the information signal, to signal an attempt to breach the outer coating or the cladding (62-66) of the optical fiber. A second case of intrusion is addressed by increasing the sensitivity of the optical fiber to microbending loss to the extent that bends in the fiber cause such high attenuation of the signal that the bends do not go undetected at the receiving station.

摘要： A solar power plant (25) comprises a focussing element and at least one capturing and concentrating element (11) that is essentially arranged in or around the focal point or the focal line of the focussing element. The capturing and concentrating element (11) comprises a spherical or conical body. The base of the body is the entry opening (13) and its truncated tip is the exit opening (15) for the electromagnetic radiation. The lateral surface (17) of the concentrating element preferably forms an angle ε with regard to the longitudinal axis (19) of the body. This angle ranges between 0.5 and 5 degrees. The body is preferably comprised of quartz glass and absorbs at least the majority of the incident thermal radiation. The light entering a concentrating element (11) is repeatedly reflected back by the lateral surface (17) into the body so that concentrated cold light reaches the exit opening (15). An optical waveguide can be connected to the exit opening (15).
