    • An automated system for processing a liquid test sample is provided. The disclosed automated system comprises a gas and liquid separator (40); an attachment for a first gas source that provides a flow of gas for transferring the test sample from a sealable sample container (16) to the gas and liquid separator and for removing at least one volatile component from the test sample in the gas and liquid separator, wherein a chemical compound of interest present in the test sample is converted to at least one volatile species prior to transfer of the test sample into the gas and liquid separator, a trapping vessel (50) in fluid communication with the gas and liquid separator, wherein the trapping vessel contains at least one material capable of separating the at least one volatile species of the chemical compound from the at least one volatile component and retaining the at least one volatile species, and a heat source (52) for rapidly heating the at least one material in the trapping vessel to a temperature sufficient to release the at least one volatile species from the at least one material.

    • An integral fitting and filter assembly (10) includes a tubular body (12) having an integral proximal fitting end (14) and an integral distal fitting end (16). A central passage (18) extends from the proximal fitting end to the distal fitting end of the body. A tubular sleeve (20) is slidably received within the central passage of the body. The tubular sleeve includes a stem portion (22) and a larger diameter head portion (24). The stem portion of the sleeve is packed with a selective chemical-absorbent packing material (26), that is retained within the sleeve by first and second porous plugs (28) secured within opposite ends of the stem portion of the sleeve. The sleeve is slidably inserted into the body, and is adjustably positioned longitudinally to provide a pre-column filter that may be used to mate with differently configured mating fittings, such as high-performance liquid chromatography instrument inlet fittings.
