    • The portable intelligent whole air sampling system performs in situ air sampling over multiple time periods at individually programmable times, rates and volumes. The system contains multiple independent disposable syringes (38-40) that collectively provide a large sampling capacity for a large number of samples over an extended period. In addition, the unit/sampler features a battery powered (712) system for portability, operational ability in a wide variety of environmental conditions, an internal time stamping feature to record time and date of events, and microprocessor controlled program features for flexible sampling options. The removable cassette/carousel (32) provides sample portability to a sample extraction device that functions opposite the field sample intake device. Sampling system mechanical components include a removable syringe cassette/carousel (32), a motorized carousel drive (92), a motorized plunger extractor (34), and a motorized syringe selection fork (36). With the programmable microprocessor and three motor syringe selection and/or operation mechanisms, any number of syringes can be precisely operated during the sampling period by rotating a carousel to any available syringe. Sample extraction system mechanical components include a removable syringe cassette/carousel (32), motorized carousel drive (792), and motorized plunger depression drive (704). With a programmable microprocessor (800) and two motor syringe selection and/or operation mechanisms, the samples within any number of syringes (38-40) can be precisely extracted. Further, varying sized carousels and varying sized disposable syringes can be combined for additional flexibility in the sampling or extraction system.

    • The invention relates to an insert (40) for an aircraft-mountable inflow and outflow apparatus (12). The insert (40) has an accumulating sleeve (44), an inflow line (46) and at least one exit opening (54). The regulating sleeve (44) has an entry opening (42). The inflow line (46) has a supply-line connection (48) for a respective supply line (14). The accumulating sleeve (44) forms a first supply-line portion (44), is designed for insertion into a respective shaft (20) of the respective inflow and outflow apparatus (12) and is dimensioned such that, in a state in which the insert (40) has been inserted into the respective shaft (20), the entry opening (42) of the accumulating sleeve (44) is located in the vicinity of an opening between a respective head part (21) and the respective shaft (20) of the respective inflow and outflow apparatus (12). Furthermore, the accumulating sleeve (44) is connected to the supply-line connection (48) for a respective supply line (14) via the entry line (46), which constitutes a second supply-line portion (46). In addition, the accumulating sleeve (44) is designed so that, in the state in which the insert (40) has been inserted into the respective shaft (20), the pressure gradient generated between the entry opening (42) of the accumulating sleeve (44) and the at least one exit opening (54) of the insert (40) is one which ensures airflow.

    • Onboard systems and methods for early detection that an aircraft is approaching a volcanic (ash) plume or a gas plume having a concentration of a volcanic gas which would be toxic to humans. The detection method generally comprises the steps of measuring the concentration of one or more volcanic gases in air circulating in a space inside an aircraft and generating an alarm when one or more measured volcanic gas concentrations exceed a respective user-specified threshold or when a pattern of volcanic gas concentration is recognized with a user-specified confidence level. These systems are configured so that the alarm indicates the proximity of dangerous levels of either a volcanic gas or of volcanic ash. In particular, the detection system utilizes the air circulating through an aircraft cabin or cockpit to enable use of low-cost, carry-on electronic devices.
