    • The invention relates to a method for operating a controllable shock absorber (1), in particular for a vehicle suspension. The shock absorber comprises a cylinder pipe (10) with a hydraulic fluid sealed therein, a piston (2), which can be moved axially inside the cylinder pipe (10) along a cylinder pipe axis (A) and which sub-divides the cylinder pipe (10) into two working chambers (11, 21), and a piston rod (3) running parallel to the cylinder pipe axis (A) and connected to the piston (2). The piston (2) has at least two fluid passages (12, 22), by means of which one working chamber (11, 21) is connected to the other working chamber (21, 11); a first valve arrangement (13) is located at a first fluid passage (12) in order to damp the movement of the piston in a first actuation direction (R1) and a second valve arrangement (23) is located at a second fluid passage (22) in order to damp the movement of the piston in a second actuation direction (R2). Each valve arrangement (13, 23) has at least one valve plate (14, 24) which rests on a valve seat (15, 25) when the valve is in a closed position and which is at least partly at a distance from the valve seat (15, 25) when the valve is in an open position. Each valve arrangement (13, 23) comprises a pilot chamber (16, 26) and the respective valve plates (14, 24) can be pre-tensioned into the closed position of the valve by the application of pressure to the pilot chamber (16, 26). The pressure in each pilot chamber (16, 26) can be adjusted by at least one pilot valve (31), said pilot valve (31) comprising a valve body (32) that can be moved in a defined manner between a closed position and an open position, as a result of which an outflow cross-section between the pilot chambers (16, 26) and the working chambers (21, 11) can be adjusted in a specific manner. A dynamic pressure (p) can be applied in a defined manner to the valve body (32) on the outflow side, as a result of which the movement of the valve body (32) is damped.

    • There is provided a structure vibration control device including a hydraulic damper (1) whose damping force characteristics vary in response to magnitude of an earthquake and whose characteristics are maintained for a long period of time regardless of an environmental temperature change. The hydraulic damper (1) includes a preload chamber (29) into which high-pressure gas is charged in series with a hydraulic chamber (27). The preload chamber (29) absorbs volume change of the hydraulic chamber (27) caused by the temperature change and a piston rod (6) and balances a bias force of a spring (40) within the oil chamber (27a) and of the preload chamber (29). Piston valves (37 1 and 37 2 ) have a great damping force characteristics to a weak earthquake and a low damping force characteristics to a strong earthquake. The piston valves (37 1 and 37 2 ) may include an orifice beside a check valve function, by which the great damping force characteristics lies within a range of 150 to 800 kN/(m/sec).
