    • In response to actuation of the erase key, the typewriter determines whether automatic erasing is possible i.e. whether the selected location of the memory contains an erasable character. If the selected memory location contains an erasable character, an AND gate (100), subjected to inputs identifying an erase key actuation and a character code from the memory decode, provides an output which causes the execution of an erase cycle. If the selected memory location does not contain an erasable character, the typewriter terminates the erase cycle with a backspace, and an AND gate (101) or an AND gate (102) causes the setting of a manual erase latch (112). Actuation of a character key as the next actuated key completes the manual erase, through AND gate (103). Actuation of a key other than a character key resets latch (112) through AND gates (104, 105, 106).

    • In a text processing system having a keyboard (8), a printing mechanism (6), a text storage (10) and a processing unit (2), an improved content-addressed text search apparatus is provided that locates a reference point in a string of text-representative codes in storage (10) based on comparisons with an address string entered by the operator on the keyboard (8). Such comparisons are automatically modified to equate certain codes and code patterns that present an ambiguity to the operator in establishing the address string, e.g. a tab operation and a series of space operations may have the same apparent result for printing but are stored as different codes. By so expanding the acceptable matching code patterns selectively with respect to the codes presented for comparison, the likelihood of operator success in identifying a desired text location is increased significantly.

    • A text recorder includes a multi-character display controller which is operated in a multi-character mode to record (e.g., print on paper or generate a CRT or the like display, (21)) multi-character sequences in response to an operator actuation of a single key of a keyboard (20). Operator actuation of a key generates a coded signal representative of the actuated key, but in the multi-character mode, the normal text recorder function of printing or displaying the character associated with the key is inhibited, and instead, a memory device (8, 10) is accessed which has stored at a location corresponding to the actuated key, a sequence of coded signals representative of a plurality of character, functions or both. The storage device (10) may include a plurality of set of stored signal sequences representing a plurality of multi-character sequences.-The selection between the different storage sets is effected based on a particular key or key sequence previously actuated. The invention is applicable to text recorders designed for use with English or other languages.

    • In a text processing system comprising a keyboard (8) a printing mechanism (6), a text storage (10) and a processing unit (2), a line adjustment apparatus takes adjustment decisions based on a set of zones that are defined along the line respective of appearance considerations for the right margin. The potential end location for each successive word ready for addition to a line is calculated and such end location is compared to the previous word's end location, by reference to the appearance zones, for determining whether or not the word should be assigned to the next line, i.e., whether or not a carrier return is inserted. By so identifying the word end positions that bracket a word with respective corresponding zones, decision logic, based on preferred responses to the various zone combinations presentable by such end points, is enabled, effectively, to impose an overall pattern of preferred line ending decisions to establish a right margin.
