    • An impact printer with a hammerbank having print hammers retained by a permanent magnet (82) for impacting a print ribbon, and a mechanical driver for moving the hammerbank across print media. First and second coils (98, 100) for each hammer are wrapped around first and second pole pieces (84, 86), one of which is asymmetrical to the other pole piece. One of the pole pieces (84) can have a generally elongated longitudinal form with the coil (98) wound around the longitudinal form. The other (86) can have a generally arcuate form, with the coil (100) wrapped on a portion between the ends thereof. The coil (100) wrapped around the arcuately formed pole piece (86) is thicker than the coil (98) wrapped along the longitudinal pole piece (84). The result is to provide pole pieces and coils for an impact printer having differing spatial relationships that can be staggered, or formed asymmetrically for more compact coil and pole piece placement to improve printer efficiency.

    • A printing system prints an image on a printing surface of a printing medium with a print head array having multiple columns of print heads, such as electro-mechanical actuator impact or non-impact print heads, ink-jet print heads, or bubble jet print heads, having varying positions in a vertical dimension in the print head array for printing in a corresponding printable column area of the image. The printing medium is moved relative to the print head array in the vertical dimension to cause selected non-contiguous portions of a defined printable segment along a horizontal dimension to be printed in each printable column area by the print heads having varying positions in the vertical dimension. Further movement in the vertical dimension causes selected non-contiguous portions of multiple defined printable segments to be printed. By combining the movement in the vertical dimension with movements of the print head array relative to the printing medium in the horizontal dimension of not more than the widest distance between any two consecutive non-contiguous portions, all defined printable segments contained in the image are printed.

A magnetic shunt (54) is established between the pole pieces (44) to provide a greater magnetic effect. The pole pieces (44) are sized and plated at the ends, with a spaced wear bar (70) between them to provide improved performance and longer wear.
