    • A printer of the dot matrix type has a series of hammers with pins that print on an underlying medium. The pins are released from magnetic retention by reversing the plurality of a permanent magnet. This is controlled by electro-mechanical drive circuits and logic circuits. The printer has a power supply which supplies an output of a voltage level for driving the electro-mechanical circuits connected to a ribbon drive, platen drive, paper feed, shuttle motor, and fans at a given voltage and the hammers at a different voltage. A thermal sensor is connected to a heat sink for power supply and the printer controller changes the rate of print when pre-established temperatures are sent.

    • The invention relates to a method in printheads (1) with a plurality of print elements (4) arranged movable in relation to each other and a moving mechanism (7, 9, 11, 12, 14) with magnetic field-responsive forces for moving selectable print elements to print or inactive positions. With utilisation of the method the forces with which selected print elements are moved in appropriate cases to their print positions can be changed in co ordination for a plurality of print elements. In accordance with the invention this is achieved by a magnetic field change co ordinated for several print elements.
      The invention also relates to a printhead (1) with a plurality of first electro­magnet means (9, L1 L24) for moving selectable print elements (4) and also a second electromagnet means (LB) common to a plurality of print elements, for co ordinated change of the forces for a plurality of print elements with which the print elements can be moved to their print positions.
      A method and a printhead in accordance with the invetion are primarily intended for matrix printers.

    • An impact printer with a hammerbank having print hammers retained by a permanent magnet (82) for impacting a print ribbon, and a mechanical driver for moving the hammerbank across print media. First and second coils (98, 100) for each hammer are wrapped around first and second pole pieces (84, 86), one of which is asymmetrical to the other pole piece. One of the pole pieces (84) can have a generally elongated longitudinal form with the coil (98) wound around the longitudinal form. The other (86) can have a generally arcuate form, with the coil (100) wrapped on a portion between the ends thereof. The coil (100) wrapped around the arcuately formed pole piece (86) is thicker than the coil (98) wrapped along the longitudinal pole piece (84). The result is to provide pole pieces and coils for an impact printer having differing spatial relationships that can be staggered, or formed asymmetrically for more compact coil and pole piece placement to improve printer efficiency.

    • The specification describes a low reluctance magnetic circuit for a dot matrix line printer for retaining hammersprings (16) by the magnetic circuit having pairs of pole pieces (44) formed of magnetically conductive sheets having a space for receipt of a permanent magnet (52). A coil (94,96) is wrapped around a portion of each of the pole pieces (44) between the magnet and the ends to provide a reverse magnetic field to the magnetic field provided by the permanent magnet (52). A magnetic shunt (54) is established between the pole pieces (44) to provide a greater magnetic effect. The pole pieces (44) are sized and plated at the ends, with a spaced wear bar (70) between them to provide improved performance and longer wear.
