    • Disclosed is a printing machine comprising: encoders (311 and 312) configured to detect respective angular velocities of a drive roller and a driven roller as a travel speed of core members inside a transfer belt (160); a DSP (321) configured to extract from a temporal variation in a ratio of the measured speed at each roller speed ratio data (profile data) having a frequency corresponding to the speed ratio of a core portion; profile data memory (332) configured to store the profile data; and a head controller (334) configured to control the timing at which each image is formed by a head unit (110) on the basis of the profile data so that positional deviation among multiple images on the transfer belt (160) may be reduced. The head unit (110) forms multiple images on a record medium under the control of the head controller (334). Thus, an ink misalignment at the time of printing can be prevented with high accuracy by recording a change in the core members inside the belt as a profile, using this profile, and reducing memory usage and arithmetic processing load.

    • A thermal printing apparatus for printing graphic images on sheet material (5), such as a vinyl sheet, utilizes a platen drive to move the sheet material (5) between a roller platen (40) and thermal print head. The thermal print head presses the sheet material into engagement with the roller platen (40) along a linear zone of contact, and a drive motor (64) is drivingly connected to the roller platen (40) through a series of drive gears to rotatably drive the roller platen (40), and in turn move the sheet material (5) between the platen (40) and print head. A pair of registration sprockets (46) are mounted on opposite ends of a common sprocket shaft (50), and engage corresponding feed holes (H) formed in the marginal edges of the sheet material (5). The registration sprockets (46) guide and steer the sheet material (5) as it is driven between the roller platen (40) and the print head, and substantially prevent buckling or like distortion of the sheet material (5). A sensor (68) is coupled to the sproket shaft (50), and generates signals indicative of the rotational position and direction of the registration sprockets (46), and thus indicative of the position of the sheet material (5) relative to the print head. A controller is coupled to the sensor (68), and selectively energizes the heating elements of the thermal print head in response to the positional signals transmitted by the sensor (68) and image data to accurately print graphic images on the sheet material (5).

    • An encoder system for providing a large number of actual positional control pulses per revolution utilizes an optical digital disc (40).
