    • The invention relates to a method for operating a communications network (102), in particular an Ethernet network. Network devices (400) that are coupled to the network have a switch device (4) and a control device (2) that is coupled to the switch device (4), and the switch device (4) has at least one receiving port (10) and a sending port (9) for sending and receiving data via the communications network (6). Fuse devices (20) for monitoring a particular data transfer rate are assigned to the receiving ports (10). The fuse devices (20) block data reception at a particular receiving port when a previously determined maximum data transfer rate is exceeded. A possible annular structure using bidirectional communication paths and the limitation of the data transfer rate at the receiving ports guarantee improved fail-safety and error analysis in the event of transfer and hardware errors, in particular babbling idiot errors. The invention further relates to a network arrangement (101) having a plurality of corresponding network devices (100, 200, 300) which function according to said method.

    • The invention relates to methods and to apparatuses for increasing quality of service in a network having nodes. According to the invention, the following steps are performed: a) selecting at least one of the nodes as a monitored node; b) producing at least two observer nodes by selecting from the plurality of nodes, wherein the monitored node is excluded from the selection, in such a way that both incoming data traffic of a particular data packet class to the monitored node from at least one of the at least two observer nodes and outgoing data traffic of the particular data packet class from the monitored node to at least one of the at least two observer nodes are completely determined; c) generating expected total outgoing data traffic of the monitored node on the basis of (i) the outgoing data traffic produced as a result of the particular incoming data traffic of the particular data packet class and (ii) expected data traffic of the data source of the at least one device; d) generating a difference value from a difference of the outgoing data traffic and the expected total outgoing data traffic: e) detecting the monitored node as a faulty node if the difference value exceeds a specifiable threshold value. The invention can be used in the field of safety-critical applications, such as medial applications, monitoring devices, and in-vehicle communication systems.
