摘要： An optical fiber includes a monolithic elongated mosaic core having a longitudinal axis and configured with a silica-based medium with a uniform refractive index, and a plurality of coaxial elongated individual elements which do not waveguide light at a given wavelength and are received in the silica-glass medium. The refractive indices of the medium and individual anti- waveguiding elements together determine a cumulative effective refractive index of the mosaic core. The optical fiber further includes at least one cladding surrounding the mosaic core and provided with a cladding refractive index which is lower than the index of the mosaic core, so that the mosaic core waveguides the light at the given wavelength.

摘要： A beam shaper has a cartridge having opposite threaded ends and an optical system operative in the cartridge. The optical system is configured to shape a rotationally symmetrical, collimated input beam, which has a substantially Gaussian intensity distribution, into an output beam with a substantially uniform intensity distribution. The optical system is optionally configured with a combination of a cylindrical lens and a Fresnel biprism having a common focal plane. The lens and Fresnel prism are operative to shape the output beam into a polygonally-shaped beam spot on the surface to be laser treaded which is positioned in the focal plane of the optical system. Alternatively, the optical system has a conical lens configured to shape the output beam so that a beam spot on the surface, which is positioned in the focal plane, has a circular shape with the substantially uniform intensity distribution.

摘要： The present invention is a method and system for reducing contamination in the resulting plasma of a weld produced by a fiber laser. The invention establishes the fiber laser in an optimal configuration for applying a high density beam to a weld material that eliminates spectral interference. The beam is applied in a narrow bandwidth of 1064 nm +/- 0.5 nm in one operative condition using an inert shielding gas, preferably argon, in a cross-flow or controlled environment around the welding region to prevent contamination of the plasma forming in the weld region. The method is optimized by determining and avoiding the emission spectrum for the fiber laser and the cover gas or gasses as well as any particular excitation spectra for the weld material. The system can utilize a single laser input, or can utilize multiple lasers joined by coupling means and utilizing a switch to select one or more of the fiber lasers.
