    • The present invention addresses the problems of the increase of leakage current and noise failure induced in a peripheral device, which are attributable to a steep dV/dt because when a power conversion device is configured using a wide-bandgap semiconductor element, the turn-on speed and turn-off speed are extremely fast. A power conversion device comprises: a converter for converting an AC voltage to a DC voltage; a DC intermediate circuit for smoothing the DC voltage converted by the converter; an inverter for converting the DC voltage smoothed by the DC intermediate circuit to an AC voltage; a gate drive circuit for driving a semiconductor switching element in the inverter; a current detector for detecting current flowing through the power conversion device; and a control circuit for detecting each current component value from the current detected by the current detector and for, based on the detected each current component value or the power factor obtained from the each current component value, changing the gate resistance value of the gate drive circuit.

    • In a method for detecting rotation direction of an AC motor, quickly and correctly, when re-starting the AC motor after generation of an instantaneous electric power interruption, and also an electric power conversion device for the AC motor mentioned above, there are provided a converter 21, a smoothing capacitor 22, an inverter 23 for inverting a DC electric power from the converter into a three (3) phase AC power having a desired frequency thereof, and a controller/driver portion 4 for driving/controlling switching elements building up that inverter, wherein detection is made at a timing "t A " or "t B " when AC voltages of U-phase and V-phase among three (3) phases of AC inductive electric powers from the AC motor intersect with each other, and when supplying the three (3) phase electric power to the AC motor, again, after stoppage of an output of that electric power conversion device, a flow path for freewheeling current is formed between the inverter and the AC motor by driving part of the switching elements building up the inverter at the timing detected, and the rotation direction of the motor is determined depending on the freewheeling current detected.

    • There arises a problem in that, in a case where a load short breakdown or the like occurs in a power converter that uses a wide bandgap semiconductor element, an extremely high short-circuit current flows and it is not possible to protect the semiconductor element. There is provided a power converter including: an converter that converts an AC voltage into a DC voltage; a DC intermediate circuit that has a smoothing capacitor that smooths the DC voltage converted in the converter; an inverter that is configured to have a wide bandgap semiconductor switching element that converts the DC voltage smoothed in the DC intermediate circuit into an AC voltage; a reactor that is provided between the smoothing capacitor and the inverter; and a diode that is connected in parallel to the reactor. The diode is connected to a terminal of the smoothing capacitor or to a bus bar connected to a portion in the vicinity of the terminal of the smoothing capacitor, and the diode is connected to a terminal of the wide bandgap semiconductor switching element or to a bus bar connected to a portion in the vicinity of the terminal of the wide bandgap semiconductor switching element.
